Math Competition

One of the many clubs at CAC is the mathletes! These students go to competitions around the state and compete against other teams head-to-head to see who is has best mathletes.

CAC Algebra teacher Ms. Angela Kyle started the team, and she said, “I love math and these students. While I know lots of people don’t love math, I wanted to encourage those that do.”

Ms. Kyle was in math competitions when she was younger. The idea of starting her own math club came from one of her old classmates, abd she started a team at CAC because she felt that the students at CAC that loved math could also experience what she did.

Most of these competitions usually take place in February, March and April all over Arkansas. Students go and compete at these places aiming to make it to the state finals at University of Central Arkansas. Ms. Kyle likes to take students to the UCA competition because she is familiar with the professors at these competitions.

Ms. Kyle says, “Hands down, the best part is seeing them cheer each other on.” She says the team has the loudest of all the teams at these competitions cheering on all of our competitors.

Sophomore David Webster, who placed 2nd in algebra in the most recent competition, loves math. He joined the team because he said, “I like Ms. Kyle and thought she was a good teacher.”

David likes to do many things for these competitions — he likes systems of equations and also graphing.

The Book Report

In this edition of the Pony Press, we wanted to highlight a book that the 11th grade AP Lang class is reading right now. Junior Wyatt Smith is part of Mrs. Arnold’s AP Lang class and is currently reading "The Great Gatsby." Wyatt explains that "The Great Gatsby" is about a man named Nick Carraway who moves into a house next to a big mansion with a very mysterious man living in it that throws huge parties! He also says that they aren't far into the book, but they are learning about a love story that is blooming in the mix between Gatsby and Nick’s cousin, Daisy. “My favorite character is probably the main character, Nick,” Wyatt says, “I watched the movie before I read the book, and it really helped me understand everything that was happening in the story. I love the movie; it's really good.”

Speak Up! - Lilly Arnold

Lilly Arnold is a 6th grader who has a passion for reading. She enjoys it because books can take her to other worlds. Her favorite book series are Percy Jackson and Harry Potter, which is also her favorite book to movie adaptation because they were very similar and accurate.

“I just like how they took me to a different place, and the authors wrote really well.”

Lilly personally thinks that reading is widely underrated and people just haven’t found the right books yet. Her advice to people who want to get into reading but don’t know where to start is to find books that relate to your interests

“If you like history then try historical fiction. Try to find stuff that suits your interests.”
