Fall term is well under way here as we come up on Thanksgiving. We’re looking forward to a year of new beginnings. PSU welcomed a new president this fall, President Ann Cudd. The department welcomed the most diverse group of undergraduates ever at our undergraduate orientation/welcome meeting in October.
We’re also excited to announce that we have just submitted a proposal to the university for a new, joint bachelor’s degree in Computational Linguistics. We worked hard with Computer Science last year to design the degree, which will require 44 credits in Computer Science and 40 credits in Linguistics, 12 credits of math, and general education requirements. As artificial intelligence becomes more and more prevalent, it is important to have a balance between programming and knowledge of language.

We’ll keep you updated as the proposal wends it way through the university and state bureaucracies. We’re also eager to hear from alums as to where they are and what you’re doing. If you haven’t been in touch recently, do send me an email and let us know what you're up to! And everyone in the Portland area - current, past, or future students, and friends - don't forget to join us for First Friday: Pizza Jerk., 1708 SW 7th 4:30-5:30 or later the first Friday of every month. It was great to see so many alums there in October!

"In my graduate studies at PSU, I have been fortunate enough to have been included in a research project in connection with CLEAR Global around Somali minority language advocacy as well as membership in an internationally collaborative project around southernizing applied linguistics, positioning itself for initial work to be showcased at the upcoming AAAL colloquium. I am working on developing my MA thesis around war, forced ethnic migration, and the effects of this trauma on language speech acts, family linguistic systems and identity. I hope to see how I might further my research work from my experience in these projects."

Help the Applied Linguistics department support our graduate students by donating to the James R. Nattinger Endowed Scholarship, which provides provides a stipend to its recipient - because all students should be able to focus on their studies as they become professionals who understand the importance of language in society. Our graduates help people around the world gain the language and skills needed to succeed, so please consider helping them.
