Some of us can instantly remember our favorite teacher—the grade we were in, the subject they taught, and the way they made us feel. These memories stay vivid because the emotions behind them are so strong. Maybe it was their patience when no one else understood, the advice they offered when you were too afraid to ask anyone else, or the passion they brought to every lesson. Whatever it was, that teacher made an impact—and for many of us, they’re the reason we never gave up.
Being an educator today is one of the most important roles a person can have. Educators shape the future of our current generation, with the power to inspire, encourage and guide students toward achieving their goals—while helping them feel seen, valued and capable. For Lisa and Jose Mendez (’09, ’06), that was the dream—to become the kind of educators who truly make a difference in students’ lives.
As a young couple, Lisa and Jose always dreamed of attending UIW. When they decided to pursue degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies, the choice was clear. Known for its smaller class sizes and tight-knit community, UIW gave the Mendezes the unique opportunity to experience the kind of supportive environment they hoped to one day create for their own students.
UIW played a pivotal role in shaping the Mendezes’ journey—not just through academics, but through experiences and mentorship that taught them a powerful truth: teaching is about shaping hearts as much as minds. Every moment with a student is an opportunity to make a lasting impact. These lessons became the foundation of a lifelong commitment to education.
Today, Lisa and Jose proudly serve as principals of Carson Elementary School and Bernal Middle School in Northside ISD. Their journey began in the classroom as teachers, where they spent years cultivating their passion for supporting students and educators. From there, they transitioned into leadership roles—first as administrative interns, then into junior administrative positions. Each role continued to shape their perspective about what it means to lead with purpose and heart.
The Mendezes credit UIW with instilling a strong foundation that allowed them to root their values in faith, service and a commitment to lifelong learning. These guiding principles have shaped every decision they make as leaders in education. As a way to give back to the University, Lisa, alongside Dr. David Campos, regularly hosts UIW field observers and student teachers on her campus, investing in the future of the teaching profession.
To anyone currently on their own journey, the Mendezes encourage students and alumni to stay connected to the Mission and values that make UIW so special. Build relationships, lean on your mentors, and never underestimate the impact you can have on others.
