Resources and Support Update: Feb. 17
|
Dear Spartan families,
As classes are set to resume Monday, we wanted to send an update with some additional information and resources. As we continue to process the violence that occurred on campus, we appreciate your grace and patience — and hope you are extending the same grace and patience to yourself. Again, thank you for your continued support.
Take good care,
Laurin Gierman, Director

Course Modality for the Remainder of the Semester
As classes resume Monday, faculty are being encouraged and supported to provide time and space for students to talk and process in class. Instructors have been given the autonomy to adjust syllabus expectations as needed and should not try to make up for lost time, or to scramble to “catch up.”
Credit/No Credit Option Available
An email is going out to your student today sharing that MSU will be offering Credit/No Credit grade reporting option for all undergraduate courses for spring semester 2023. Students will have the entire semester to make that selection. Additional details will be available soon to help them make an informed decision regarding Credit/No Credit.
If students need assistance with classes (including a grief absence or medical withdrawal), they should reach out to their academic adviser. There are many individual student accommodations that can be made to help them transition through this period and heal.

Campus Safety In addition to MSU Police and Public Safety, the East Lansing Police Department will be providing additional support to the university and have a greater presence on campus. Classroom Emergency Guidelines are available in classrooms across campus.
Encourage your student to download the SafeMSU App. SafeMSU is available for download through the Apple Store and Google Play. The app provides access to a number of safety resources right from your smartphone.
Additionally, there are a number of questions regarding the very important topic of campus safety. This is a conversation the entire campus community will be having in the days and weeks to come, and we will be sure to share opportunities to engage with campus leadership in this conversation as they happen. Visit msu.edu/emergency for the most up-to-date information.

No Media Signs
We have created "No Media" signs for students who wish to avoid speaking to press on campus. They will be available at the 1855 Place welcome desk as well as various other locations around campus.

Support for Students
Spartans experienced significant trauma Monday night in physical and emotional ways. Counseling services are being provided for students through both virtual and in-person opportunities and will continue beyond Sunday. Please encourage them to utilize support in whatever means are effective for them. Here is a link for students to help them consider ways to strengthen their resiliency in the coming days and weeks.

Support for Families Our students experienced trauma, and many of us are unsure how to help them move forward. We are also unsure of how to move forward ourselves. It is just as important for Spartan families to receive support and have space to talk about our experiences.
Virtual and in-person listening sessions will be available for you, as one who supports a student, and we encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities. Hours and links are posted here. Additionally, here is a link for families with helpful tips on how you can support your student.

FAQs
As expected, you have many questions. We don’t have all of the answers, but we are working with campus administrators and partners to help gather resources and information. We are posting frequently asked questions, and the answers to those questions, on this webpage. It is being regularly updated, so please check back often. We also have a family group on Facebook and regularly post information and updates and encourage you to consider joining.
