American University

Dear AU Community,

Last night, DC Fire and EMS, along with AUPD, responded to a medical emergency in the Terrace Dining Room (TDR). Sadly, despite rendering lifesaving measures, a member of our dining staff employed with our dining operator, Chartwells, passed away.  The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is conducting a further investigation, which is standard in such circumstances. There is no suspicion of foul play or concern for community safety in this matter. Additional information will not be available until the investigation is complete and the individual’s family is notified.

Any community member needing support can access campus services including:
  • Students seeking support are reminded that the Center for Well-Being and Psychological Services offers crisis intervention services through the AU ProtoCall 24-hour support line (202-885-7979). The Office of the Dean of Students staff is also available to support students with concerns that affect their academic success.
  • Faculty and staff may access support through the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program with BHS by calling 800-327-2251.
  • Chartwells employees may access grief counseling support services by contacting Brenda Volpe at brenda.volpe@compass-usa.com.
We ask that you keep the family in your thoughts.

Sincerely,

Bronté Burleigh-Jones
