Newest Medical Students Receive White Coats |
With colorful autumn foliage as a backdrop, on October 13 medical students in the Class of 2027 gathered at UVM’s historic Ira Allen Chapel to receive their first white coats. This annual rite of passage for Larner’s newest class of students officially welcomes them into the medical profession and emphasizes the responsibility they carry as they don the traditional physician’s white coat.

| | Women’s Cancer Conference |
The UVM Cancer Center hosted the 26th annual Women’s Health and Cancer Conference on September 29, attracting some 600 attendees from 30+ U.S. states and four foreign countries. The conference’s theme, “The Changing Landscape of Cancer,” reflected the many new insights into the disease in research, treatment, and patient care.

| Confronting Health Disparities |
The 2023 Health Equity Summit, “Closing the Margin: Avenues to Health Equity,” a collaboration among the University of Vermont, the Larner College of Medicine, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the UVM Health Network, will be held October 29–30, 2023, at the Davis Center on the UVM campus.

| Ziller Appointed HSRC Director |
Erika Ziller, Ph.D., M.S., has been appointed director of the Health Services Research Center at the Larner College of Medicine, effective September 5, 2023. She joins UVM from Maine, where she served as director of the Maine Rural Health Research Center and chair of public health at the University of Southern Maine.

The Vermont Medical Society’s 2023 Leadership Awardees included the following Larner faculty: Norman Ward, M.D., associate professor of family medicine, Distinguished Service Award; Lauren MacAfee, M.D., associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences, Physician of the Year Award (with co-awardee Brattleboro family medicine physician Denise Paasche, M.D.); and Rebecca Bell, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics, Founders’ Award.

Marilyn Cipolla, Ph.D., M.S., professor of neurological sciences (left), and Daniel Weiss, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine (right), were inducted into the Vermont Academy of Science and Engineering (VASE) at its Annual Fall Meeting on the Middlebury College campus on October 10. The aim of VASE is to foster a deeper understanding of scientific and technical matters among the citizens of the state of Vermont.

The University of Vermont Cancer Center, in collaboration with the UVM Medical Center dermatology group, partnered with the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation to bring free skin checks to the community at an Indigenous Peoples Day event in Stowe on October 8. Skin checks hosted by Abenaki Health Equity Coordinator Lucy Neal will be available on Wednesday, November 15, at the Holland Food Shelf, 26 School Road, Derby Line, Vermont.

Julie Dragon, Ph.D., director of the Vermont Biomedical Research Network (VBRN) Data Science Core, and director of the Vermont Integrative Genomics Resource (VIGR), and Scott Tighe, director of technologies for VIGR, will travel to Florida's Kennedy Space Center for the November 9, 2023 launch to the International Space Station (ISS) with their pioneering DNA extraction technology.
