With the Fall term just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start thinking about your Canvas course sites – how to best set them up for student success, ensuring everything is accessible, and how to get help along the way.

THE CANVAS PORTAL WEBSITE

Duke’s Canvas portal website - go.canvas.duke.edu - is your primary source for information and resources on teaching with Canvas at Duke. Highlights include:

Learning Canvas: If you've never used Canvas before, start here. The resources in this section will help you learn the basics.

Using Canvas: Once you're oriented to Canvas, this section has documentation specific to Duke instructors such as information about rosters and how to download the Duke sample site.

Information for your TAs: The teaching assistant role in Canvas has different permissions than those of an instructor or a student. We recommend reviewing with your TA what they should and should not be doing in your Canvas course to adhere to university policies.

Setting Up Your Canvas Site for Your and Students' Success

ENSURING COURSE ACCESSIBILITY
|
UDOIT is an accessibility tool that scans course content, identifies possible accessibility issues, and guides you through how to resolve those issues.
You can access UDOIT directly from your Canvas course navigation menu. Give it a try and see how a quick scan can make a meaningful difference for both you and your students.

QUICK TIP: COPY CONTENT FROM OLD TO NEW COURSES
|
You can copy course content such as assignments, modules, and pages from previous Canvas courses into existing courses. You can also bulk migrate quizzes from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes. The Import Course Content option allows you to copy content into existing courses. See the Instructor Guide for screenshots of this process.
Notes:

- Course imports can be set to migrate all content or select specific content - more details are available in this guide.

Importing a course more than once may have unintended consequences. If you import content into a new course, edit the content in the new course, and later import the previous content again, the imported content will override the existing content.
- If you copy all content or include course settings in selected content, the grade posting policy from the original course will override the grade posting policy in the new course.
- Imported assignments will retain their assignment posting policy and participation dates from the original course.
- When a course including a New Quiz with an item bank is copied, the bank is automatically shared with the new course.

To prevent 0s (zero grades) from being automatically entered into the Gradebook when importing content into a course with a late/missing policy set up, it is recommended that you temporarily disable your late/missing policy before importing the content. You can re-enable it once the import is complete.
