| Dear colleagues,
I begin this week full of W&M pride following multiple transformative announcements and productive discussions during our April BOV meetings. From a $15 million gift for the Raymond A. Mason School of Business, to the news that W&M football will be joining the Patriot League as an associate member, to the debut of the new name for what will now be the College of Arts & Sciences, it has been a semester of significance for the university.
At the end of last week, the Board approved a resolution affirming the university’s measured, values-based and merit-based approach to evolving federal guidance. I encourage you to take a moment to read the complete resolution, titled “Merit-based excellence, student opportunity and freedom from discrimination,” and President Rowe’s message to the campus community.

Here are the top “5 Things to Know” this week:

-
Congratulations to Shannon White, this year’s Shirley Aceto Award honoree. The award is presented annually by the university to a member of instructional or professional faculty who demonstrates an exceptional commitment to excellence in service to the campus community. You can learn more about Shannon’s fantastic work in the recent feature from W&M News.
- The W&M community is invited to take part in the Denim Day – Wear Jeans with a Purpose campaign this Wednesday, April 30th. Denim Day is held annually on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It is an opportunity to honor survivors in the W&M community and show those who have been impacted by sexual violence that they are not alone.
-
Also on Wednesday, April 30th, you’re invited to join the Virginia Coastal Resilience Collaborative at William & Mary for an introduction to the world of homeowners’ insurance and how the new reality of worsening and more frequent disasters are changing the landscape of insurance in Virginia. This half-day symposium will explore how insurance functions, discuss the different types of insurance, examine drivers of change in insurance, and feature renowned experts from both Virginia and around the U.S.
-
The AI Policy Initiative task force is compiling its final report. If you have not done so already, please take a moment to provide feedback by May 5th. This is your chance to share what you like about W&M’s approach to AI, what resources or support you would like to see in the future, and any questions you may have about the future of AI on campus.
- This week’s shout-out goes to those of you who will be retiring at the end of this semester. Thank you for your outstanding service to W&M and for being an integral part of your students’ academic successes. I look forward to celebrating your accomplishments together at the Spring Faculty Retirement Dinner later this week!
