Inside Chelsea Square | Weekly Update from Vanderbilt |
| |
Hi neighbor,
We hope you are well! This update outlines planned construction activity on Vanderbilt’s Chelsea campus from Monday, April 13, through Sunday, April 19.
At a glance: This week’s key community impacts |
-
Weekday work hours to be extended as crews go into overtime to keep the project on track. Monday through Friday, crews may be working up to 10-hour days. Work is expected to conclude by 6:30 p.m. each day.
- Parking on 21st Street and 20th Street remains impacted.
-
The south side of 21st Street is expected to close for crucial utility work. The north side of the street will remain open for traffic.
- The 21st Street campus entrance remains closed; access campus via the 20th Street entrance (429 W. 20th St., New York, NY 10011).
- The Chapel is temporarily closed to the public as a safety precaution.
- The Close remains impacted by the stormwater infrastructure upgrade and use of equipment. The installation of the infrastructure is complete, and restoration of the area is expected to produce a moderate noise level. The temporary walkway and fencing remain.
-
A steady grinding noise at moderate levels is expected throughout the week due to brickwork restoration on Seabury. A steady hammering noise is also expected as work on the Seabury roof continues.
- Interior renovation work continues this week with less community impact. The community may notice low to moderate noise levels. The community may also notice increased traffic in the area and visual changes to windows.
Progress moves quickly around here! From excavation to installation to backfill, water tanks are now in place below ground. These tanks may be out of sight, but their impact will be visible for years to come.
More details: Expected construction activity & impacts |
-
The community can expect ongoing worker presence from Monday through Saturday of this week. Saturday will remain up to an eight-hour workday; days may extend up to two additional hours Monday through Friday.
- Deliveries/trucks are expected throughout this week; impacts will be similar to those in prior weeks. When necessary, flaggers will direct traffic.
-
Parking on 20th and 21st remains impacted. The south lane on 21st Street will close; the north lane remains open for traffic.
- Optical monitoring is expected twice a week. Workers will be outside and around campus surveying; no cameras or photos will be used.
-
Temporary staging of construction materials, equipment and storage sheds remains on the lawn areas of The Close and along West 21st Street.
South lane of 21st Street to close; north lane remains open.
-
Noise impact: Steady moderate noise levels with equipment use.
- Spatial impact: The south lane of 21st Street is expected to close as early as Monday and remain closed for several weeks.
-
FYI: The north lane of 21st Street will remain open to maintain traffic flow in the area. Signs are already posted on both sides of the street in preparation for the work. No parking will be available on either side of the street for the duration of the project. This allows the contractor to work on utilities in the area to make a connection from the street to the buildings.
Renovation of the 21st Street campus entrance continues; the 21st Street entrance is closed. Use the 20th Street entrance to access campus.
-
Noise impact: Moderate noise levels, with work expected to be louder during periodic breaking of concrete.
- Spatial impact: The 21st Street campus entrance is closed for the foreseeable future. Community members will use the 20th Street entrance (429 W. 20th St., New York, NY 10011) to access campus. Equipment will be stored in the area.
Stormwater infrastructure upgrade complete; backfilling of the hole to occur in The Close.
-
Noise impact: Steady moderate noise levels with equipment use.
- Spatial impact: The installation of the stormwater tank, located in the Close, is complete. Crews are filling in the hole. A temporary walkway is in place, with signage marking paths. The Chapel is temporarily closed as a safety precaution.
-
FYI: Stormwater tanks are important for the long-term care of the campus. This tank catches runoff water from the buildings, reduces erosion and prevents pollution from entering the waterways.
Seabury brickwork restoration remains active; Seabury roof work continues with steady hammering.
-
Noise impact: Steady grinding and hammering expected at a moderate noise level.
- FYI: This maintenance work is part of an ongoing effort to preserve not only the appearance of our historic campus but also support its long-term structural integrity.
The contractors’ campus entrance on 20th Street is active. Parking will remain impacted; the ramp at this entrance is in progress.
- Noise impact: Moderate noise levels.
- Spatial impact: Parking on 20th Street will remain impacted in the coming months. The community may notice some scaffolding being taken down outside of Sherred, Seabury and Dodge. Fear not, it will return as good as new after ramp work is complete.
Interior renovation work continues this week.
- Noise impact: Low to moderate noise levels.
- FYI: Crews are working on interior layouts and further inspections. Dorm rooms are in progress. Aesthetically, the community may notice temporary windows with plywood additions. Replacement windows will be installed later in the renovation process.
Work is expected inside the parking garage with minimal community impact.
- Noise impact: Minimal to moderate noise levels.
- FYI: To run upgraded water lines into Keller, workers will be present in The Enclave parking garage. This work will not affect traffic flow in the garage.
There are small private events on campus April 15 to April 17. More foot traffic than in typical day-to-day operations can be expected, especially around Hoffman Hall. Otherwise, impacts on the community are expected to be limited.

April 23: Big Quarterly: Discovering Untold American History Through Music and Dance
Join us for an evening of conversation and musical performances featuring excerpts from "Big Quarterly," an original musical that brings to life an extraordinary and largely untold chapter of American history. Presented by Vanderbilt University–New York City and produced by NYC–based director and choreographer Jōvan Dansberry, this special event brings to life the extraordinary legacy of Peter Spencer, a man once enslaved who founded the nation’s first wholly independent Black church in 1813. One year later, he established the Big August Quarterly, an annual gathering in Wilmington, Delaware, that still exists today.
April 30: Curating America: Art, Society, and Influence
With its world-famous galleries, studios, and museums, Vanderbilt University is thrilled to join our neighbors in Chelsea. Long a rich, cultural site of exhibitions, performances and shows that galvanize, challenge and stir audiences, we will spotlight Chelsea's talented arts leaders and the conversations they engender. This program features a panel of celebrated curators who, through their critical framing and uplifting of artists, influence how we see, how we collectively understand ourselves and how we leap forward in our thinking of what even is "art".
