Dear Eagle Nation:
Coppin State University is an institution that has shaped leaders and prepared them for success for generations.  In our 123 years, our Eagles are prepared to soar to new heights,  unafraid to meet the challenges along their path. That is due to the expertise of our faculty, the dedication of our staff, the devotion of our alumni, and the support of our alumni.
The power and presence of Coppin State University was felt last week during the 2023 Economic Inclusion Conference at Coppin (EICAC), hosted by the College of Business and Center for Strategic Entrepreneurship (CSE). The conference brought together great minds in Baltimore, and from across our state, to discuss ways Coppin and our partners are transforming the community, fostering economic inclusion, socioeconomic mobility and empowerment.
I want to thank CSE founding director Ron Williams, College of Business Dean Sadie Gregory, Comptroller Brooke Lierman, our alumni, and partners who made the conference a success.
This 2023 EICAC illustrated how Coppin, as a thriving institution, has a growing global influence, as well as economic and social impacts that go well beyond West Baltimore. We will continue to build upon our legacy and broaden our reach for years to come.

Today, May 1 is National Decision Day, where college bound seniors share their next steps after school - the college or university they will attend in the fall. Last year, I began a new presidential tradition of visiting the high schools of our newest Eagles on National Decision Day. On Friday, I had the opportunity to welcome 17 of our newest Eagles from the esteemed Western High School in Baltimore. These young women are excited to spread their wings and make their mark.
For college bound students, where they choose to continue their education is among the biggest decisions they will ever make. I am proud that more scholars are choosing to invest themselves in Coppin State, and partner with us to shape their futures.
I look forward to celebrating with more students as they declare Coppin State as their university of choice, and welcoming our newest members of Eagle Nation to our campus community in the fall.

Jawaad A. Williams

Rising Senior Selected as Langenberg Legacy Fellow

Jawaad A. Williams (’24), a Rehabilitation Services major from Newark, New Jersey, was named a member of the second cohort of the Langenberg Legacy Program.

Student fellows across USM institutions participating in the Langenberg Legacy Program undertake year-long, micro-level civic engagement projects that speak to macro-level issues, including promoting educational equity in early childhood, developing civic engagement and social leadership, and assisting ex-offenders reentering society.

Jawaad’s project will focus on Pre-K educational inequalities and the exclusion of minority students from Pre-K educational opportunities. The project will shed light on this issue through panel discussions, conversations, and awareness campaigns involving Coppin State University students and faculty.

Jawaad is Mister Junior 2022-2023 and was recently elected as the next Mister Coppin for 2023-2024. He also serves on the Student Activities Planning Board, a media host for The Coppin Room, and as a Campus Ambassador through the Office of Admissions.

Over the course of the fellowship, students will gather with fellows from other USM institutions to grow connections, share best practices, and build a community of civic leaders. At the end of the Langenberg Legacy Fellowship, the USM will publish students’ final project reports in an annual publication and on the USM website

Eagles on the Move

The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services is hiring hundreds of workers to fill its ranks, says Secretary Carolyn J. Scruggs (’91). Scruggs, is a veteran of the agency and the first African American woman to lead the agency.
In an interview with WBAL-TV, she offered this advice: "Don't question you dreams. If you have a dream, a desire to be successful, keep pushing forward. Pray about it, trust God and move forward, because you can do anything you set out to do.”
