We hope you are well! This update outlines planned construction activity on Vanderbilt’s Chelsea campus from Monday, April 20, through Sunday, April 26.
At a glance: This week’s key community impacts |

-
Parking on 21st Street and 20th Street remains impacted. The sidewalk on 21st Street, near Lorillard, will be temporarily impacted by drainage system updates.
- The south side of 21st Street is closed for crucial utility work. The north side of the street remains open for traffic.
-
The 21st Street campus entrance remains closed; access campus via the 20th Street entrance (429 W. 20th St., New York, NY 10011).
- The Chapel is temporarily closed to the public as a safety precaution.
-
The Close remains impacted by the stormwater infrastructure upgrade and use of equipment. Restoration and ongoing groundwork in the area produce a moderate noise level. The temporary walkway and fencing remain.
-
A steady grinding noise at moderate levels is expected throughout the week due to brickwork restoration on Seabury, Sherred, Edson, White and Lorillard. A steady hammering noise is also expected as work is being done on the Seabury and Pintard roofs.
-
Interior renovation work continues this week with moderate to medium noise levels coming out of Seabury and Keller. The community may notice increased traffic in the area and the movement of materials for disposal.
Facade restoration is in progress across campus!
Our crews are working hard to preserve the character of our beautiful campus while strengthening the structure for years to come.

Main drainage system upgrades are in progress with impacts on the 21st Street sidewalk and parking access near Lorillard.
- Noise impact: Moderate noise levels.
- Spatial impact: Sidewalk access on 21st Street near Lorillard will be impacted this week. Likewise, parking along this section of 21st Street may be impacted as crews install new piping.

FYI: The north lane of 21st Street will remain open to maintain traffic flow in the area. No parking will be available on either side of the street for the duration of the project. This allows the contractor to work on utilities in the area to make a connection from the street to the buildings.
Renovation of the 21st Street campus entrance continues; the 21st Street entrance is closed. Use the 20th Street entrance to access campus.
- Noise impact: Moderate noise levels, with work expected to be louder during periodic breaking of concrete.

The old (bluestone walkway) will be made new, soon! The Chapel is temporarily closed as a safety precaution; further groundwork continues in the area.
-
FYI: Stormwater tanks are important for the long-term care of the campus. This tank catches runoff water from the buildings, reduces erosion and prevents pollution from entering the waterways.
Seabury brickwork restoration remains active; work on Sherred and Edson begins, moving toward White and Lorillard.
-
Noise impact: Steady grinding expected at a moderate noise level.
- FYI: This maintenance work is part of an ongoing effort to preserve not only the appearance of our historic campus but also support its long-term structural integrity.
Seabury and Pintard roof work continues with steady hammering.
-

There are four events scheduled on campus this week. Two are private (Tuesday and Saturday), and two (Wednesday and Thursday) are open to the community. The community can expect more foot traffic than during typical day-to-day operations, especially around Hoffman Hall. Otherwise, impacts on the community are expected to be limited. We hope you’ll join us on campus this week!

Wednesday, April 22: Construction & Cocktails
Similar to Coffee & Construction, neighbors and residents are invited to stop by, enjoy a cocktail, sample our special Vanderbilt brew, and connect directly with James Kellerhouse and the project management team. These sessions are designed to provide brief construction updates, answer questions, share upcoming milestones, and offer a space for open conversation about what’s ahead as work progresses on campus.
The event will take place on Wednesday, April 22 at 5 p.m. in Moore 1E. Please enter the campus at 429W 20th Street. RSVPs are appreciated but not required.

Thursday, April 23: Big Quarterly: Discovering Untold American History Through Music and Dance
Join us for an evening of conversation and musical performances featuring excerpts from "Big Quarterly," an original musical that brings to life an extraordinary and largely untold chapter of American history. Presented by Vanderbilt University–New York City and produced by NYC–based director and choreographer Jōvan Dansberry, this special event brings to life the extraordinary legacy of Peter Spencer, a man once enslaved who founded the nation’s first wholly independent Black church in 1813. One year later, he established the Big August Quarterly, an annual gathering in Wilmington, Delaware, that still exists today.
The next construction update will be shared on Sunday, April 26. When necessary, time-sensitive notifications are shared via AnchorAlert to those enrolled.
We look forward to sharing more updates as work progresses on our Chelsea campus. Thank you for your support!
