The exhibition brings together contemporary artists from Southern California and Baja to explore a region in constant transformation. Selected by a curatorial advisory panel including Johnny Bear Contreras and Gabriel Boils Terán, the exhibition offers fresh perspectives on landscape, revealing how environment, culture, history, and community shape our evolving sense of place.

The ISLAA Research Fellowship supports PhD students based at universities in the United States whose work contributes to doctoral dissertations and advances original scholarship on Latin American art. Fellows conduct primary source research in New York and develop projects grounded in the holdings of the ISLAA Research Center. The program gives emerging scholars direct access to materials that may be unavailable elsewhere and encourages close engagement with overlooked artists, archives, exhibitions, institutions, and intellectual networks.

In Four Mediterranean Capitals: Rome, Constantinople, Palermo, and Venice. Essays in Architecture and Visual Experience, William Tronzo brings together insights into these major late ancient and medieval capitals to uncover their common visual vocabulary of civic space, architecture, and symbolic meaning. He delves into the viewer’s experience of mosaic, sculpture, drapery, revetment and stone, of wall, dome, and portal, of street and forum to reexamine how historic buildings helped shape the experience of the civic, the imperial, and the divine manifested in urban life and daily movement.

Repatriación Voluntaria [Voluntary Repatriation] brings together a group of recent works in which Rubén Ortiz Torres (Mexico, 1964) revisits questions that have accompanied his practice for decades: the construction of identity, the circulation of symbols, and the instability of origins themselves. Situated within the cultural space that connects Mexico and the United States, the exhibition begins with a deceptively simple question: what does it mean to return?

Between Tides brings together six artists—Moko Fukuyama, Ilana Harris-Babou, Las Hermanas Iglesias, Carlos H. Matos, Amalia Pica, and the collective SUPERFLEX—to rethink ping-pong tables as playable sculptures. These works invite beachgoers to approach the game in unexpected ways, transforming a familiar activity into a space for experimentation and new connections.

By channeling private fantasy into virtuosic drawings, Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen, 1920–1991) created a libidinal realm in which freedom and pleasure were the reigning tenets.
