| Dear colleagues,
I was honored to represent Academic Affairs throughout last week’s Board of Visitors meetings. Our discussions underscored William & Mary’s forward momentum, including the adoption of a bold campus blueprint as well as a new initiative to expand the university’s national reach. Thank you to the many teams and individuals whose planning and preparation were integral to productive sessions. It was exciting to reflect on the future of academic excellence and innovation at W&M for generations of students and faculty to come.

Here are the top “5 Things to Know” this week:
|
-
Beginning tomorrow and through the end of the week, W&M will move more than 500 students currently in temporary housing to their permanent rooms in Pine Hall. This is fabulous news for our students! At the same time, the mid-week move will likely affect their established sleep, study, and transportation routines. I ask you to please extend grace to these students as they settle into their new residence halls.
-
You are invited to take part in the tenth annual Inclusive Excellence Symposium on October 10. This year’s symposium features keynote speaker Steve Curwood, creator and host of the long-running radio program Living on Earth, as well as multiple engaging workshops and opportunities for connection and reflection. Please visit the event website to learn more about the agenda and register by this Wednesday, October 1.
-
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has released updated process guidance that no longer requires formal submission of a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). Because our QEP focus, Applied Learning for All, is deeply rooted in the university’s mission and values, this work will continue outside of a formal QEP process. This increased flexibility allows the initiative to remain focused on enhancing student learning through applied, real-world experiences across the curriculum, with more opportunities for meaningful impact and without the procedural constraints of a prescribed accreditation process.
-
The Office of International Students Scholars & Programs (ISSP) is monitoring ongoing changes in immigration policy, including the recent presidential proclamation regarding H1-B workers. Current W&M H-1B employees and employees with a pending H-1B petition received a message from ISSP with specific resources and guidance. Please continue to refer to the university’s Immigration Updates web page for the latest information and contact your department’s dean with specific questions.
-
This week’s shoutout goes to every member of the W&M community whose hard work is reflected in the university’s recent rise in national rankings. This recognition reflects William & Mary’s growing reputation for strength and impact, fueled by the passion you pour into your fields and our shared commitment to excellence. Congratulations!

Finally, earlier today, you received a note about office hours with Iria Giuffrida, W&M’s new Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs & Development. I encourage you to take part and share your perspective on how the Office of the Provost can support your academic career journey.
