Summer May Be Over, But Mosquito Season Isn’t!
|
Summer is over, but mosquito activity persists. Follow the tips below to fight the bite and protect yourself from West Nile virus (WNV):
|
-
Use EPA-registered repellents with Picaridin, DEET, IR3535, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. See the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District’s website for the EPA Interactive Repellent Guide.
- Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
- Remove standing water around your property.
|
Another tip: Did you know wearing permethrin-treated clothing can prevent tick and mosquito bites? You can either look for clothing already treated with permethrin or treat them yourself. Watch this CDC video for permethrin application guidance.
More resources: NSMAD offers a number of programs and resources to help fight the bite and reduce the mosquito population.

Hefty ReNew Recycling Program Reminder
|
Thanks to everyone who has started using the Hefty ReNew (orange bag) program!
What is Hefty ReNew: Single-family households and those in buildings with four units or fewer in Skokie can use the Hefty ReNew orange bags to collect hard-to-recycle plastics, such as chip bags, foam egg cartons, plastic pet food bags, plastic grocery bags, bubble wrap, foam cups, plastic utensils and other flexible film and packaging.
How it works: Simply fill an orange Hefty ReNew bag with accepted items. When the bag is full, tie it up tightly and place it in your recycling cart alongside other loose recyclables.
|
-
Important: Regular recyclables, such as bottles, jugs, cans, tubs and jars, should continue to be placed loose in your recycling cart. Do not place regular recyclable items into orange Hefty ReNew bags.
|
Purchase Hefty ReNew orange bags at local retailers: Ace Hardware, at 5035 Oakton St., Crafty Beaver at 4810 Oakton St., and the Jewel at 9449 Skokie Blvd.
