Prevent Mosquito Breeding On Your Property
|
The North Shore Mosquito Abatement District has found the first West Nile virus positive mosquitoes to occur in its traps in Skokie this year. In addition, the Illinois Department of Public Health has announced the state’s first human case of West Nile virus of 2025 in southern Illinois.
Fight the Bite
While the risk of being infected with West Nile virus is low at this time, the NSMAD recommends that residents take personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites including:
|
-
Avoid peak mosquito activity: Stay indoors during dawn, dusk and early evening when mosquitoes are most active.
- Wear protective clothing: When spending time outdoors, especially in wooded areas, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.
- Use insect repellents: Apply insect repellents containing DEET on exposed skin, and consider spraying your clothing for added protection.
|
Eliminate Standing Water
Mosquitoes breed in standing water. Follow these tips to eliminate potential breeding sites:
|
-
Remove standing water from outdoor items, such as flower pots, toys, roof gutters, birdbaths and ponds.
- Maintain and clean catch basins. NSMAD offers mosquito larvae treatment for catch basins—call 847-446-9434 for more details.
- Change the water in birdbaths and plant pots weekly.
- Drain plastic pools daily and store them indoors when not in use.
- Trim grass and shrubs to reduce mosquito hiding spots.
- Clear gutters and ensure proper drainage to avoid water pooling.
