| Barry Fitzgerald: 30 Years of Teaching & Making retrospective exhibition at Cider Gallery in Lawrence, Sept. 30 |

In honor of his 30th anniversary on the KU faculty, Barry Fitzgerald, professor of illustration and animation, will be exhibiting a retrospective of his work alongside the work of 70 of his former students.
An opening reception will take place on Friday, Sept. 29, 5:00 – 9:00pm, as part of Lawrence’s Final Fridays.
Barry Fitzgerald: 30 Years of Teaching & Making will be on view at Cider Gallery in the east Lawrence Warehouse District, Sept. 29 – Oct. 21.

Architecture professor's solution to improve water quality and create habitat deployed in Florida |

Prefabricated mangrove panels, designed by architecture professor Keith Van de Riet to improve the health of coastal ecosystems and protect shorelines, are being deployed in Florida's Sarasota Bay.
The mangrove panel system was awarded a prestigious 2023 AZ Environmental Leadership Award by Azure Magazine.

For 40 years, the Design Symposium at the University of Kansas has hosted a remarkable array of designers and artists to share insights with students and the local creative community. See the Fall 2023 schedule
Formerly called the Hallmark Symposium, this series of lectures and intensive workshops led by creative professionals from around the globe illuminates new ideas and helps to demystify professional practice for aspiring creatives. And further, as scores of KU graduates have said, Symposium experiences can be key moments in an academic journey – where suddenly a career path is clarified.

| Fall 2023 Architecture Lecture Series |
The Architecture Lecture Series kicked off on Sept. 15 with Stephen J. Cavanaugh, leader of DLR Group’s timber research and design studio. The series continues Oct. 20 with a lecture by 2018 ArcD Alumni Award honoree John C. Guenther titled, The Gateway Arch: an Illustrated Timeline, and concludes on Nov. 3 with Mack Scogin and Merrill Elam.

Pinkney house set to be Studio 804's 16th LEED Platinum project |

Studio 804's latest student design-build project, the Pinkney Neighborhood House, at 432 Indiana Street, is located in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lawrence on a property previously developed, but more recently plagued with overgrown vegetation. The 26 students in the 2023 cohort designed a 1,800-square-foot single family dwelling and an accompanying 500-square-foot accessory dwelling unit on the site.

Photography professor's solo exhibition examines personal anxiety and collective unease

Lilly McElroy’s exhibition at Studios Inc. in Kansas City, Sept. 8–Oct. 21, includes looped videos and photographic prints made from physically manipulated color negatives. McElroy also has work in KU's Spencer Museum of Art as part of their exhibition Reading the World, on view through Jan. 7.

Design alum Yvette Fevurly has joined Perkins&Will as the Managing Principal of the Branded Environments Practice. |
Since graduating with a BFA in graphic and interior design in 1996, Fevurly has developed environmental graphics programs, signage, and wayfinding in corporate, hospitality, healthcare, and development sectors. At Perkins&Will, she will lead the firm’s Chicago studio in all things brand, signage and wayfinding.

Architecture alum Arjun Bhat, associate vice president at CannonDesign, has been honored with a 2023 Rising Star Award by Healthcare Design Magazine. |
Beyond becoming one of the healthcare design industry’s most accomplished young leaders, Bhat has stayed highly engaged with the School since graduating in 2006 as the KU Department of Architecture Thayer Medalist. He has given hours of his time to participate in on-campus studio reviews and advise students about professional practice. In 2019, he chaired the School’s Alumni Symposium and was instrumental in developing this event that brought together accomplished alumni from both departments to share their work with the KU campus community.

Industrial Design graduate Emilie Gavillet recently signed a contract to play goalie for Pomigliano CF in the top professional soccer league in Italy. |
An accomplished student athlete and designer, Gavillet (Class of 2022) was an IDSA (Industrial Designers Society of America) Midwest District Student Merit Award Finalist. She played goalie for the Jayhawks soccer team from 2018 to 2022.

Gregory Thomas, design professor and director of the Center for Design Research, spent the summer assessing all hospital buildings comprehensively. During this review, he documented existing and potential issues related to infection control.
