CSUB celebrates opening of new MESA Center, new grant
CSUB celebrated the opening of its new Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 17, welcoming students and the community to learn more about how the new center will support students.
MESA is a nationwide program that supports underrepresented and first-generation students studying science, technology, engineering and math subjects by offering additional support, mentoring and hands-on experiences.
Dr. Jane Dong — dean of CSUB’s College of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering — has wanted to bring MESA to the university since she started in her role in 2022. With around $135,000 in funding from Chevron and a $250,000 K-16 Regional Collaborative grant from the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, that vision has now been realized.
“By working together, we are creating a clear path from classroom to career, with the right support our students need to succeed and to grow into professionals, to serve our region,” Dr. Dong said. “That impact will be significant.”

Energy 'a multidisciplinary conversation' at CERC conference
The California Energy Research Center (CERC) hosted its fifth-annual conference on April 9, bringing experts from the realms of academia, industry and government to the CSUB campus for a day of presentations, panels and discussions.
Previously known as the Carbon Management Symposium, the event was renamed the California Energy Research Conference to better encompass the wide range of topics the center covers relating to state and regional energy issues. New this year were two separate tracks guests could follow for more specialized discussions: one focusing on power and energy and another focusing on subsurface.
Guests were first welcomed to the event in the Doré Theatre by CERC Director Katy Larson. Though she has attended CERC conferences from the beginning, this was Larson’s first conference since taking the CERC role last summer.
“Energy is a multidisciplinary conversation, and CERC reflects that today,” Larson told guests.

Updates from the Geological Sciences Department
Historical Geology students recently went on a field trip to Ernst Quarries, where they were successful in finding fossil shark teeth, whale bones and other marine fossils. Dr. Tony Rathburn led the local field trip to the 10-15 million-year-old deposit. Provost Thien also joined the field trip. In other geology news, the San Joaquin Geological Society awarded scholarships to nine CSUB geology students at a special event where students also presented their research posters. Another student, Jose Gonzalez, received a scholarship from the Pacific Section of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Finally, Dr. Anna Cruz published two research papers: "Southern Hemisphere initiation of the mid-Pleistocene transition” in Science Advances and "Nd isotope response to precipitation variability in the Western Tropical Pacific over the last 30 kyr" in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems.
