Last Wednesday, Coppin State University hosted a screening event in collaboration with Maryland Public Television (MPT) to showcase the film "American Coup: Wilmington 1898." The event took place in the Talon Center and featured a panel discussion with esteemed faculty members and community leaders.
The film, which tells the story of the deadly race massacre and insurrection in Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1898, was followed by a thought-provoking discussion moderated by Dr. Kaye Wise-Whithead, host of "Today with Dr. Kaye" on WEAA 88.9 FM.
Panelists included Dr. Johnny Rice II, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice; Dr. Melissa Buckley, Chair and Associate Professor of Social Work; and Dr. John Hudgins, Associate Professor of Sociology and Human Services Administration. The discussion covered various topics, including the historical context of the Wilmington coup, the role of media and law enforcement, and the importance of addressing historical injustices to create a more inclusive national history.
Thank you to MPT, Travis Mitchell, Dr. Kaye, Dr. Rice, Dr. Buckley, Dr. Hudgins, and all attendees for their participation and support.
