UVM Children’s Hospital Receives $25 Million Gift |
On October 28, the University of Vermont unveiled a new name for its Children’s Hospital in honor of a $25 million gift from entrepreneur, philanthropist, and civic leader Tom Golisano of Rochester, New York, and Naples, Florida: Golisano Children’s Hospital at University of Vermont Health. The UVM Children’s Hospital was chosen for this transformational gift in recognition of its exceptional care, collaborative culture, strong leadership, and significant regional impact on patients and families.

Calabresi Elected to National Academy |
Peter Calabresi, M.D., who joined the Larner College of Medicine and UVM Health October 1 as professor and chair of the Department of Neurological Sciences, has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine—considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine—in recognition of outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

The Vermont Medical Society has named Whitney Calkins, M.D., assistant professor of family medicine at the Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine, its 2025 Physician of the Year, in recognition of her excellence in patient care, compassion, and dedication to the principles of good medical practice and her deep commitment to improving the health and well-being of Vermonters.

Larner Assistant Professor of Medicine and cancer geneticist Kara Landry, M.D., an oncologist at UVM Medical Center, was featured on the University of Vermont’s Across the Fence program for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. She discussed breast cancer risk, detection, prevention, genetic testing, and treatment with program host Amy Finley. Have you scheduled your mammogram?

On October 22, the college honored students, faculty, and medical residents during their induction into the Aequitas Health Honor Society, the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. These prestigious societies recognize members of the Larner community who exemplify the core values of professionalism, leadership, education, scholarship, and service.

Recently, Richard L. Page, M.D., dean of the Larner College of Medicine and chief medical affairs officer for the University of Vermont, was honored by the American Clinical and Climatological Association as their newly elected president. Beth Kirkpatrick, M.D., was also elected as a new member; she presented her research at the recent 137th annual meeting. They join other Larner members including Mary Cushman, M.D., and Polly Parsons, M.D.

On October 16, Larner’s dermatology division hosted the Vermont Dermatological Society Annual Meeting, which brought together community dermatologists to attend a grand rounds–style case presentation, see patients, and listen to a guest lecturer. Melanie Bui, M.D., associate professor of medicine, piloted a research poster session where Larner students—including awardees Audrey Watson ’28 (pictured at left, right) and Caroline Johnston ’27—shared their work.

NATIONAL RURAL HEALTH DAY

The Larner College of Medicine joins the nationwide observance of National Rural Health Day on November 20. Our efforts include clinical partnerships with providers in rural communities, research and policy studies on rural health care topics, and incentive programs to create a pipeline of physicians practicing in rural Vermont.
