Black History Month in Colonial Nation

Every school in the district celebrated Black History Month in some way. Check out some of the highlights.

The Panthers held an Assembly

Kudos to the students, teachers, and staff at Gunning Bedford for a Black History Month assembly that included everything from music to poetry, and information about the Greek-lettered fraternities and sororities. Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority Inc., the first intercollegiate historically African American sorority even "stepped" on stage. What a great way to celebrate, expose students, and learn!

Spirit Week at Southern

The Sharks looked sharp in their T-shirts representing historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) during Spirit Week, which had a daily special theme in celebration of Black History Month.

Blacks in Wax Museums

Learning about Black History was extra fun and educational for students at Pleasantville (top) and Wilmington Manor (bottom). Children dressed up like their favorite history-makers while sharing information with those who came to see and hear about their displays. How clever!

Learning at Leach

A Black History Museum was created for students at Leach. Interactive displays allowed the children to see and hear about African American history-makers.

The Divine Nine

Students at McCullough were treated to a special assembly where they learned about the history of the Divine Nine, which are historically African American Greek-lettered sororities and fraternities. Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. also "stepped" after a video was shown that shared the history of the African-rooted performances. The Mustangs were thrilled to learn about this part of collegiate and post-graduate life.

AKAs at the Berg

Members of the Newark Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. spent a morning reading to students at Eisenberg. Each kiddo also received a free book to mark the end of Black History Month thanks to United Way of Delaware.

 Who's Counting?

Dressing up for the 100th Day of School never gets old, which is why many of our schools encouraged students and teachers to dress as if they were 100 years old. It was so much fun!

Let's Dance!

Students danced their hearts out at Southern's Valentine's Day Dance. The kids loved dressing up for the occasion while teachers, staff, and parents enjoyed watching the children having a blast.

Put Your Best Dress Forward

Coordinators with Communities in Schools decided the best way to show students how to dress for success was to lead by example.  A $50 gift card was offered to the best-dressed male students, but when girls got wind of the contest they wanted in too.  The "Standing on Business"  Day was such a success teachers and staff (middle) also participated. Everyone looked sharp and ready to impress!

Prom Prep

Students at William Penn hit the stage for a fabulous prom fashion show thanks to the senior class committee. Let the shopping begin!

Future Healthcare Professionals

The McCullough Middle School HOSA chapter recently participated in a state-wide competition for students interested in healthcare careers. Yaniris Infante, Khloe Seward, Akira Gilmore-Hodges, and Dereon Harvey did a great job representing the school. Khloe and Dereon came home with a gold medal in Health Career Display and Yaniris earned a silver medal in Medical Reading. Colonial Nation is proud of these Mustangs!

Students, staff, and families have a great resource at their fingertips thanks to a partnership with the Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA).  SafeDE is an application available on your child’s device and can be downloaded to your phone.  The app provides three features: resources, access to a crisis text line, and anonymous reporting.
