Call for Education Day 2025 Breakout Submissions: Due by Monday, 3/3/25 |
The Academy of Educators is seeking proposals for interactive breakout sessions for the 2025 Education Day event on 10/14/25. The theme for this year will be Cultivating Joy & Meaning in Health Professions Education, so we are particularly interested in topics that explore how to foster engagement, fulfillment, and connection in teaching and learning.
Potential topics include:

- Making teaching fun (e.g., improv in teaching, gamification in teaching, escape rooms in teaching, increasing interactivity beyond PollEv)
- Storytelling & narrative medicine in education
- Coaching for thriving
- Mentorship & sponsorship for sustained engagement in teaching
- Building community in education
- Promoting a learning culture
- Designing CME that feels rewarding rather than obligatory/re-engaging faculty in lifelong learning
- Recognizing & preventing educator burnout

Other proposals will also be considered. Collaboration across WashU Medicine programs & departments is welcome.

Call for Education Day 2025 Abstract Submissions: Due by Wednesday, 5/1/25 |
The Education Day committee invites faculty and learners across all WashU Medicine programs & departments to submit an abstract for poster or oral presentation at Education Day on October 14, 2025. We are looking for a wide variety of abstracts representing both education research and innovative approaches to education across the health professions and across learner stages from undergraduate through post-graduate (including continuing education). Works in progress and submissions from students, residents & fellows are welcome.
Submissions are encouraged on the following education-related topics:

- Scholarship of teaching and learning
- Course and curriculum development
- Instructional design
- Education delivery
- Selection of learners (e.g., to enhance diversity and excellence in the field)

Assessing and supporting learners
- Professional development of health professions educators

In addition, we welcome abstracts that align with this year's theme, Cultivating Joy & Meaning in Health Professions Education, such as those that explore ways to foster engagement, fulfillment, and connection in teaching and learning.
There will be a limited opportunity for oral abstract presentations. All requirements for abstract submission, encouraged topics, tutorials, and contact information for questions are viewable on the Academy of Educators website.

Qualitative Research Methods for Education Scholarship |

The Academy of Educators in collaboration with the Medical Education Research Unit (MERU) is excited to offer the Qualitative Research Methods for Education Scholarship course. The course will run from March 2025 to May 2025 via Zoom. This is a certificate course that will provide in-depth work in qualitative research methods, including writing research questions, planning sampling and data collection strategies, analyzing qualitative data, and writing qualitative research for publication. Scholars in the course will develop their own qualitative studies, for research, program evaluation, or other education scholarship. Applicants are encouraged to e-mail academyofeducators@wustl.edu to express interest and discuss course scheduling.

Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment |

The Academy of Educators has partnered with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to become a regional Hub for the Developing Faculty Competencies & Assessment course, which is an annual 3-day certificate course to be held April 28-30th, 2025. This highly interactive course supports faculty skill development in learner assessment (including direct observation, feedback, and more) and in designing and enhancing assessment programs. It is intended for faculty program leaders and front-line faculty assessors across all WashU Medicine programs and departments and who work with learners at any developmental stage. Whether you work with students, residents, or fellows, if you’re looking to improve your assessment and feedback skills, this course is for you!

Call for Small Grants Proposals |

The Academy of Educators in collaboration with the Medical Education Research Unit (MERU) of the Washington University School of Medicine are pleased to announce the call for proposals for grant funding for education research and scholarship projects. Projects must be focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning, rather than biomedical discovery or application. Proposals may originate from any unit within the School of Medicine. The principal investigator must be a WUSM faculty member. Any questions about the appropriateness of a proposal can be directed to MERU. Grants of up to $5000 will be awarded based on a competitive review process. Please reference the application requirements here, and limit to 4 pages inclusive of references.

Registration Now Open for Health Workforce Well-Being Day Celebratory Event 2025
|
Health Workforce Well-Being Day, held annually on March 18, was established to drive collective action and raise awareness about the clinician burnout crisis. Health care organizations nationwide embraced the day, with events recognizing the inaugural day in 2024 taking place across the United States, including National Academy of Medicine's (NAM) kickoff event celebration.
Learn how you can prepare for this year’s Day, including by registering to attend NAM's HWWB Day celebratory event on March 17, 2025!
The NAM will also host a Change Maker Summit following the public event to dig into tactical implementation and ground-level actions that are advancing well-being day to day.

Orienting AI Toward Health Workforce Well-Being

To discuss how to navigate the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence (AI), the NAM Clinician Well-Being Collaborative held an event on Orienting AI Toward Health Workforce Well-Being: Examining Risks and Opportunities, co-hosted with UC San Diego Health, in December. Hear highlights from experts on the potential of AI to both alleviate and exacerbate the challenges faced by health workers, particularly for clinician burnout, in addition to accessing the full event recording.
