Stephanie Neppl recently met with Jenna Stiles, the new Administrator of the American Gothic House Center. The visitor center and museum is located next to the iconic American Gothic House in Eldon that inspired Grant Wood's famous 1930 painting American Gothic. The center will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2027, and the iconic Iowa attraction is also pursuing an expansion project that will help accommodate larger visitor groups and support educational programming.

Lora Friest attended the Iowa Association of Business and Industry’s 2026 Elevate Iowa Manufacturing Tour at its stop in Forest City, which celebrated the outdoor recreation industry. Attendees from ABI, Winnebago Industries, the Iowa DNR, city and county tourism and economic development partners, and others met at Pammel Park to hear about the outdoor recreation industry from two speakers: Chad Reece of Winnebago Industries, chair of Governor Reynolds’ Outdoor Recreation Task Force, and Iowa DNR Director Kayla Lyon. The group also toured Winnebago’s Forest City manufacturing facility to see how outdoor recreation, business and manufacturing jobs connect.

Travel Iowa staff attended the First Impressions community forum in Sioux Center, where findings from the community’s 2026 First Impressions assessment were presented to local stakeholders and residents. Sioux Center is one of five Iowa communities selected for the 2026 program, a statewide initiative aimed at strengthening tourism, attracting new residents and improving overall quality of life. Grants

No matter the size of the town, playgrounds and outdoor recreation spaces can give residents and visitors an opportunity to get kids outside, connect with family and burn-off energy. They increase your community’s overall appeal. If your town has no playground, has a vacant lot downtown, has old park equipment or would like to develop a new type of outdoor recreation opportunity, consider the following funding sources.

The Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) is a nationally competitive National Park Service program that can fund up to 50% of large park projects for communities of 25,000 or more. ORLP’s funding helps communities create new outdoor recreation spaces, reinvigorate existing parks and form connections between people and the outdoors.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) is available to all of Iowa’s incorporated cities for acquisition, new construction or renovation of facilities and supporting facilities for outdoor recreation, including playgrounds, campgrounds, trails, boating and fishing access, swimming pools and splash pads. Many county conservation board directors are familiar with this funding so consider calling them for advice.

The Community Development & Facilities Fund brings together IEDA’s Community Facility and Pocket Parks program to help Iowa Communities strengthen essential public spaces and expand access to high-quality community amenities. This includes transforming underutilized lots into vibrant Pocket Parks.

Walmart awards grants to government entities and nonprofit organization that are creating meaningful impact in their local community, including for development of playgrounds. Applications are submitted to local stores and can secure from $250 to $5,000.
