Happy First Day of Spring Semester!
|
As we embark on the first day of the spring semester, remember, when you meet with your class for the first time, you are setting the tone for the rest of the semester.
Read this article from the Chronicle of Higher Education for advice on what to consider when preparing for the first meeting of class.
Dr. James Lang, the author of the article, also wrote the book Small Teaching, available through ETLC. Just drop an email to helpdesk@uah.edu and ask for a free copy today!

INSIGHTS: ‘Use the Syllabus Page in Canvas, Please!’ |
This fall, the ETLC surveyed students about course syllabi. Survey results revealed 90% of the students look for their course syllabus on the Syllabus page in Canvas. Feel free to put the syllabus elsewhere in the course as well, but please help the students by putting it where they look for it!

Panopto Spring 2022 To Be Archived! |
On January 28th, 2023, there will be another archiving event where every video created before August 1st, 2022 and not stored in a Master or Parent course will be archived regardless of last view date.
|
Check out your Panopto folders—both for your courses and for your Panopto My Folder. If you will be reusing the videos in a course, make sure you move the videos to a corresponding Master or Parent course. If you would like to save the video for personal reasons, download it to a personal storage device.
Not sure if you will need the video? Why not let it be archived? Any video archived will be stored for a minimum of one (1) year and can be recalled from the archive in less than twenty-four (24) hours by emailing helpdesk@uah.edu. Please don't unarchive your own.

Adding Tools to Canvas or Software to Classroom Computers? |
Are you interested in integrating a new tool with Canvas? What about using a specific piece of software in the classroom? Visit our external tool information page on the ETLC website to learn more. Here you can read about the external tool review process, submit a review request form, and view a list of approved tools. The review process can take several months to complete so get your requests in as soon as you start considering a new tool. Now is the perfect time to submit review requests for spring or summer 2023.

Will You Use Respondus Monitor Spring Semester? |
In response to the recent legal challenge to software monitoring remote students, UAH now requires students to acknowledge the following statement upon registration for classes:
“UAH uses the software Respondus Monitor to proctor exams. In registering for courses at UAH, you consent to the use of the software, including audio and video recording of your workspace area, or you consent to follow the instructions at this link to make alternate arrangements."
What this means for faculty:
- You must indicate if you plan to use Respondus Monitor as well as which assessments will require it at least three weeks in advance of the first test. We recommend that you include this information in your course syllabus.
-
This will give students ample time to notify you and Testing Services of their intentions and to make alternative plans.
- The student will be responsible for arranging to take the exam(s) in the Testing Services or with a qualified monitor.
-
If a student makes approved alternative arrangements, you will need to coordinate with Testing Services to make the exam(s) available.
- Students cannot be penalized for using an alternative.
Visit the ETLC’s website for more information about Respondus Monitor.

This conference gives educators in K-12 and higher education from across the region the opportunity to explore the challenges surrounding diversity and inclusivity and share methods for making a difference.
