| |
Join us for Halloween at the Cinematheque! YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, Mel Brooks’ 1974 "scariest comedy of all time" is as funny as a horror parody gets. The comical genius Gene Wilder stars as a young neurosurgeon who inherits the castle of his grandfather, the famous Dr. Victor von Frankenstein. Young Frankenstein believes that the work of his grandfather was delusional, but when he discovers the book where the mad doctor described his reanimation experiment, he suddenly changes his mind. | | INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS: A lauded remake of the alien invasion classic
| |
Join us for Halloween at the Cinematheque! In the 1978 first remake of the paranoid infiltration classic INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, Matthew Bennell notices that several of his friends are complaining that their close relatives are in some way different, and who later themselves exhibit the same change. As the invaders increase in number they become more open and Bennell, who has by now witnessed an attempted "replacement", realizes that he and his friends must escape or suffer the same fate. Philip Kaufman gives the ‘50s B-film sci-fi classic an update that enriches its historical context in line with the larger trend of ‘70s paranoia-focused political thrillers. The New Yorker's Pauline Kael was a particular fan of the film, writing that it "may be the best film of its kind ever made." Sutherland displays utmost skill in going from a cold rationalism to full on frenzy. Here's the trailer. Horror Season. In memory of Donald Sutherland. Thursday 9:00 pm

However, with the sudden death of Pat, Angie's place finds itself strongly called into question, requiring her to battle for recognition as Pat’s true next of kin. | | AIDA RETURNS: Journeys of loss, preservation of memory, and an unlikely homecoming
| |
Aida, director Carol Mansour’s mother, struggles with Alzheimer’s and often retreats to memories of her childhood home in Yafa. After Aida’s passing, Mansour engineers a way to return her ashes to Palestine, aided by an unlikely set of friends and strangers coming together to facilitate what should have been a simple journey. The Canadian/Lebanese/USA documentary AIDA RETURNS is a tribute to the lost past of the director’s family, an attempt to restore part of both an individual and a collective memory, and a poetic nod and affirmation to all those exiled Palestinians forbidden from returning to their hometowns, even after death. Here's the trailer. Cleveland premiere. Palestine Cinema Days. Free Screening. Saturday 5:00 pm
