Making Beautiful Things, Together

by Sarah Sears
In a world moving faster than ever, where do we find space to slow down, reflect, and build something meaningful together? As technology advances, energy demands rise, and social behaviors shift, complexity is increasing. But with complexity comes opportunity—the opportunity to design something beautiful through collaboration, curiosity, and shared understanding.

I often think about flow—that state of balanced deep work and creativity—when we find it easier to embrace change, let go of resistance, and stay open to new ways of thinking. But it’s not always easy. Routine is comfortable. Expertise shapes our identities. How do we remain open to fresh perspectives when it feels easier to lean on what we already know?

For me, curiosity is key. I like to gather information, let ideas percolate, and reflect. But in a fast-paced world, slowing down for deep thinking and meaningful conversation takes effort. Too often, we rush toward solutions without pausing to listen, challenge assumptions, and explore alternative viewpoints.

Rotary Magazine - March 2025 - Rotarian Subscribers

A few miles from Seattle's glittering downtown, home to some of the world's richest tech companies, lies "the track," a stretch of roadway home to a darker industry. Girls, some not even teenagers, have been forced into the commercial sex trade here. A Rotary club is fighting back. In this issue of Rotary magazine, one of its members takes you inside the operation to help women break free.

Also this month, we find out what drives Rotary’s 2025-26 president, Mário César Martins de Camargo of Brazil, what he’s learned about leadership as a Rotary member, and why he’s known as Super Mario.

For Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Month, we assigned a photographer in India to document the work of an industrious group of Interactors whose club has made tens of thousands of menstrual pads.

Finally, in the Our Clubs section, we go to Houston to visit a Rotary club whose members have been a who’s who of the space program since the first class of astronauts.
