UTA selected as First Scholars Network member

UTA was recently named a member of the First Scholars Network for its commitment to improving experiences and advancing success for first-generation college students. As a member of the NASPA First Scholars Network, UTA will have the unique opportunity to learn and share best practices among colleagues from across the nation and to access new models and services that will benefit first-generation students within three years.

Lou Diamond Phillips spends time at UTA

Actor, writer, and director Lou Diamond Phillips is returning to UTA, his alma mater, for a weeklong residency in the College of Liberal Arts, which began Saturday, Oct.14. The Tony Award nominee will lead classes and interact with students across the college in an all-day film shoot.

USDA issues grant for tracking carbon in soil

UTA researchers received a $450,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to create a soil carbon data management platform as part of the farm production and conservation soil carbon data monitoring network.

Scientists receive grant for earth metal research

A multidisciplinary team of UTA researchers accepted a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to improve the supply chain for rare earth metals.

Basketball open practice

UTA Athletics invites faculty and staff to a women’s basketball open practice Wednesday, Oct. 18, 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Visitors can enter College Park Center through Gate 2.

McNair lecture

Join UTA’s Office of Undergraduate Research on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 12 p.m. to hear from Carl McNair, bestselling author and founder of the Ronald E. McNair Foundation. There will be a book signing at 11 a.m. before the talk.

Financial wellness

This month, take time to do a financial awareness check. Join the Financial Wellness webinar hosted by the Office of Talent, Culture, and Engagement Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 12:30 p.m.

Volunteers needed for Friends and Family Weekend

International shipping webinar

The Office of Regulatory Services presents a webinar on international shipping regulations Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. Researchers, administrative staff, and graduate students are encouraged to attend. Those interested can RSVP online.

Halloween Open House

Join the Information Security Office for a spooktacular good time at this year’s Halloween Open House. There will be snacks, games, and prizes for the taking. Join the fun in the University Center Gallery Wednesday, Oct. 25, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Compliance Training deadline

This is a reminder for employees who recently received notification to complete their annual employee compliance training in Canvas. The due date for annual compliance training is Thursday, Oct. 26. Great Pumpkin Carnival

The UTA Fraternity & Sorority Community invites all faculty, staff, their families, and community members to celebrate the fall season at Great Pumpkin Carnival, set for Monday, Oct. 30, 6-8 p.m. in Maverick Circle. Great Pumpkin Carnival will be a free, safe, and fun trick-or-treating event with games, activities, popcorn, and candy.

Homecoming Parade entry registration available

UTA’s Homecoming Parade theme this year is Hollywood. Participate in this beloved school tradition by registering an organization in the parade by Monday, Oct. 23, 5 p.m. The parade itself will be Saturday, Nov.11, 3:15 p.m.

Shimadzu Innovation Expo

Shimadzu Scientific Instruments and the Shimadzu Institute for Research Technologies, part of the Office of Research at UTA, will host a Shimadzu Innovation Exposition, Thursday, Nov. 2, at 9 a.m. Attendees will learn about the latest innovations happening on campus and commercially with Shimadzu. The event will be located at Red River and Concho rooms in the University Center.

Homecoming Chili Cook-Off

Join the Homecoming crew and the Division of Student Affairs for the annual Chili Cook-Off, scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 8, 12-2 p.m. Teams will compete to win the ultimate prize of chili cook-off champion, bragging rights, and a trophy. The event is open to all UTA students, faculty, staff, and alumni groups.

Woman walks triumphantly in Homecoming 5K

Homecoming 5K Run/Walk/Roll

Planned for Saturday, Nov. 11, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., UTA’s Homecoming 5K will take a scenic route throughout the UTA campus. The 5K is open to all UTA students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members. Participants are welcome to walk or run. All the proceeds of the event will go toward the UTA Emergency Assistance Fund.

Global Seal of Biliteracy

UTA students who speak a language in addition to English can test their proficiency to receive the Global Seal of Biliteracy, a micro-credential that conveys language proficiency. The test is offered in more than 40 languages through the Department of Modern Languages. Email proficiency@uta.edu for more information.
