"What Makes a “Good” School?"
by Freda Deskin
Most parents will say they want their child in a good school or that they moved to a certain community or area school because it had a good school. Business leaders lament that new businesses will only move to areas with good schools. Schools receive grades of A from the state. But what IS a “good” school?
Typically, people mean they want a school with a history or reputation for high achievement. They often will name some of those schools within the region. What do these “good” schools have in common?Studies show a child's zip code significantly predicts their academic achievement due to various interconnected factors that reflect the socio-economic conditions of the neighborhood (The Costs of Inequity: Education’s the One Key That Rules Them All, The Harvard Gazette, February 15, 2016).
According to 2013 key findings from the Scholars Strategy Network, “Children from disadvantaged households often do less well in school than their classmates from more economically comfortable backgrounds. Researchers have documented this repeatedly – in studies of individual children and through comparisons of schools, districts, states, and nations. One of every five American children lives in poverty – more than in most other developed countries. U.S. educators and policymakers thus have every reason to look closely at the educational difficulties poverty creates – and take active steps to correct the problems. But lately, the exact opposite has happened. Disadvantaged schoolchildren are left to fall behind.” because reforms like No Child Left Behind pretend that poverty is unimportant.” READ MORE

District 5750 News
Dear District 5750 Rotarians, May in Oklahoma and around the World has been tumultuous. Rotary International Director Beth Stubbs shared at our Hope in the Heartland Tri-district Conference last month that the Rotary International Board of Directors shared that is the most tumultuous time in the world that we have ever experienced. Even as we were at the District Conference, about 60 miles away, Sulphur was hit by a deadly EF-3 tornado. Now more than ever, we need to Create Hope in the World. On the way to this year’s 2024 Rotary International Convention in Singapore from May 25 to 29, one of my fellow District Governors was on the Singapore Airlines flight that experienced turbulence resulting in a broken neck and his wife suffered a broken back. A committed Rotarian, he posted on Facebook that he hoped he would be well enough to still attend the convention! READ MORE

Few things evoke wonder like the night sky. But as Keith Marsh, a specialist in astrophotography, knows, capturing it on film takes skill and perseverance. His image of the Milky Way spilled out over a remote canyon in Washington state is the winner of this year's Rotary magazine Photo Awards.
Join on a photographic vision quest. Marsh, a Rotarian from California, is equally fascinated by life on this planet, and you'll see another of his images, of girls preparing to celebrate Mexico's Día de los Muertos festivities, among the finalists.
In another of this month's features, we explore the growth in landowners seeking to preserve their property and conserve habitat by working with land trusts. We'll introduce you to a club in Milwaukee that used that strategy to revitalize the city's riverfront.
In the Our World section, we look at how solar power is expanding access to health care in places with less reliable electricity. And finally, come with us to Beirut to meet a new club of young people devoted to Positive Peace in Lebanon and beyond.
