A Celebration of Democracy

by Drew Edmondson
There are many reasons to value membership in Rotary – we count service above self, it is where to go for lunch each week, we care about each other, and others.  However, perhaps the most important reason is the quality of our programs.  Each week we have an opportunity to learn something about our city, our state, our world.

We recently had a great program from the Chief Justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court, Dustin Rowe.  His message was the importance of judicial independence but within his remarks he reminded us that next year, July 4, 2026, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our independence.

What he was referring to was the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

We declared ourselves a free and independent nation, no longer colonies of the British Empire.

However, declaring it did not make it so – it triggered a war that lasted years and additional years in a struggle to determine what kind of government we would have.  It would be of value to review that struggle to understand and appreciate the government our founders ultimately created.

Nominating Committee Seeks Candidates

The Nominating Committee has begun its work to select candidates to appear on the ballot in November for officers and directors for the 2026-2027 Rotary year (when Lance McDaniel will be President.)  The committee is carefully considering a pool of potential candidates who have been engaged club members and demonstrated an interest in leadership in the club.  However, to ensure that we are making our selections from the deepest pool of qualified candidates, we would welcome any self-nominations.

If you are interested in being considered for a position on the ballot, please let Megan Law know by email no later than 5:00 p.m. on Sept. 30.  To be eligible, a club member must have been a member of Club 29 for at least three years at the time of the vote in November.  Thank you for all that you do for Club 29.

Sincerely,
Ann Ackerman - Chair
Nominating Committee

September 2025 - Rotary Magazine for Rotarian Subscribers

He may only have had a couple weeks' notice, but Francesco Arezzo says he feels ready — and lucky — to serve as Rotary's 2025-26 president after an unexpected leadership transition. For this issue of Rotary magazine, we caught up with Arezzo at the Rotary International Convention in Calgary to get to know the longtime Rotarian, orthodontist, and olive oil producer from Sicily.

Click here to read your digital copy of the September 2025 issue.
Another special person — well, place — we're getting to know this issue: Taipei. Taiwan's capital, known for night markets and ancient temples among skyscrapers, is the host city for the 2026 Rotary Convention. Find out why the global gathering should top your bucket list. Then register by 15 December for a discounted rate.
In another of this month's features, we take you to Bethlehem to meet the person who brought women's soccer to Palestine. How Honey Thaljieh, a Rotarian working at FIFA headquarters, is advancing equity in sports on a global pitch.

Finally, for Rotary's Basic Education and Literacy Month we've got a Top 10 list of children's books courtesy of a reading program started by a Rotarian that grew into a state holiday in Wyoming.
