Finding Funding for Academic Leaves
Thursday, May 7th
12pm, via Zoom

Presented by the Office of Sponsored Projects in collaboration with the Faculty Development Committee, this workshop will explore the process of finding funding to extend sabbaticals and untenured faculty leaves. Professors Tulu Bayar (Art & Art History) and Bryan Vandevender (Theatre and Dance) will discuss their experience funding leaves from external funders. OSP Research Development Manager Rhonda Newton will provide an overview of funding resources.

OSP recommends checking the status of the program and reviewing the solicitation carefully before beginning a proposal, as solicitations are frequently updated by sponsors. Some opportunities below are open to all fields as well.
Social Sciences
7/15/26, 1/10/27. Leakey Foundation: Research Grants. This program funds promising new research projects specifically related to human origins, including projects in the areas of paleoanthropology, genetics, primate behavior, and the behavioral ecology of contemporary hunter-gatherers.

7/15/26, U.S. Embassy in New Zealand: Public Diplomacy Freedom 250 Grants. Awards will range from $10,000 - $100,000 for projects that deepen U.S and New Zealand collaborations and partnerships. Certain priority areas and themes are emphasized, though the program may be of interest to faculty from any college. If interested, faculty are encouraged to also contact Ladi Carr in the Office of Global Education at Bucknell University.
8/18/26, 1/19/27 (target date). NSF: Decision, Risk and Management Sciences. This program supports scientific research directed at increasing the understanding and effectiveness of decision making by individuals, groups, organizations, and society, including the areas of judgment and decision making; decision analysis and decision aids; risk analysis, perception, and communication; societal and public policy decision making; management science and organizational design.

Natural Sciences and Mathematics
7/1/26. Research Corporation for Science Advancement: Cottrell Scholars. This program is open to tenure-track faculty who hold appointments in chemistry, physics, or astronomy departments. The 2026 deadline is for those who started their first tenure-track appointment anytime in calendar year 2023 (eligibility extensions available for parental leave or medical conditions). Grants are for $120,000 for over three years. 
6/25/26, 10/25/26, 2/25/26. NIH: Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) for Undergraduate-Focused Institutions (R15 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) (R15). The objectives of the AREA program are to provide support for meritorious research, to strengthen the research environment of schools that have not been major recipients of NIH support, and to expose available undergraduate and/or graduate students in such environments to meritorious research. The AREA program will enable qualified scientists to receive support for small-scale research projects.

8/14/26 (LOI). Templeton Foundation. The Templeton Foundation’s current funding areas are Character Virtue Development, Public Engagement, Mathematical & Physical Sciences, Religion, Science & Society, Individual Freedom & Free Markets, and Life Sciences.
9/16/26 (anticipated). NEH: Collaborative Research. This program supports sustained collaboration between two or more scholars, from one or more institutions. Check the notice of funding opportunity when it is released for subcategories being funded. In 2025, proposals were only accepted for Planning International Collaborations and Manuscript Preparation; priorities for the 2026 deadline are not yet available.

Creative and Performing Arts
7/9/26. NEA: Grants for Arts Projects. This program for organizations provides comprehensive and expansive funding opportunities for communities. Grants range from $10,000 to $100,000 and require cost share/match. The deadline cited is for intent to apply via grants.gov; the full application is due approximately 12 days later.

9/1/26. Furthermore: Publishing Grants. Furthermore supports the publication of nonfiction books concerning the arts, history, and the natural and built environments. It seeks work that will appeal to an informed general audience and give evidence of high standards in writing, design, and production. Grants range from $1,500 to $12,000 for specific publication components such as writing, research, editing, indexing, design, illustration, photography, and printing and binding. Preference is given to projects with a publisher’s commitment and feasible distribution plans.

9/10/26, 2/4/27. NSF: Computer and Information Science and Engineering: Future Computing Research. This program supports foundational and interdisciplinary research across all aspects of computing, communication and information science and engineering to advance the future of technology, systems and human-centered innovation.
Proposals accepted anytime. NSF: Organizational Change in the Professional Formation of Engineers. This area supports research and activities that revolutionize the professional formation of engineers at scale. Investigators should propose projects along one of two types: Innovation projects or adaptation/implementation projects. Innovation projects develop and apply new cultural or curricular innovations at a particular setting, and can represent the first practical implementation of established theory. In contrast, Adaptation/Implementation projects build on past work to adapt existing models to new contexts.

8/27/26, 1/28/27. NSF: Methodology, Measurement, and Statistics (MMS). The MMS Program is an interdisciplinary program that supports the development of innovative analytical and statistical methods and models for potential utility in multiple fields of the social, behavioral and economic sciences. It seeks proposals that are methodologically innovative, grounded in theory, and have potential utility for multiple fields within the social, behavioral, and economic sciences.

9/30/26 (anticipated). AAUW: Short-term Research Publication Grant. This program supports eight consecutive weeks of final writing and editing. Grants are open to women scholars in all fields of study; follow the link for additional eligibility criteria.

May 27th: Register to attend an upcoming NSF CAREER webinar hosted by Lafayette College. The webinar is open to faculty from primarily undergraduate institutions. The CAREER program supports five-year grant awards with a combined focus on research and education in all NSF-supported fields.
