The Inevitable Meeting
by Emily Taylor
Good morning, Rotary friends. Today, I invite you to pause and consider a question that gently challenges us all: When the person you could have been meets the person you are becoming, is it a moment for celebration or a cause for heartbreak?
This idea is more than a philosophical musing; it’s an invitation to reflect on our life’s journey. We each carry two versions of ourselves. On one hand, there’s the “could-have-been” self—a repository of forgotten dreams, unpursued risks, and alternate paths we once imagined. On the other, there’s the “becoming” self, shaped by our everyday choices, the hurdles we’ve overcome, and the wisdom we’ve gathered over time.
Two Sides of the Same Coin
It might seem as if these two versions are at odds. We sometimes find ourselves mourning the road not taken—the job we hesitated to apply for, the relationship we were too afraid to fight for, or that cherished dream we set aside. Such reflections can indeed sting with regret. Yet, it’s important to recognize that our “could-have-been” self isn’t a rival to be vanquished; it serves as a gentle compass. It reminds us of ambitions that once stirred our hearts and of potential still waiting to be tapped.

April 2025 - Rotary Magazine - for Rotarian Subscribers
It may not seem like much, but our habit of tossing out a mushy tomato here and a stale bread slice there adds up to sizeable dollar losses and environmental costs. A third of all food sold in the U.S. goes to waste, and about half of all wasted food comes from our homes. In this issue of Rotary magazine, we look at the real reasons we still trash so much food and what it will take to stop.
Click here to read your digital copy of the April 2025 issue.
In another feature to mark Rotary’s Environmental Month, we bring you the work of a Rotarian and polar photographer on a mission to capture the beauty and fragility of a warming world. That fragility was on display earlier this year in the Los Angeles wildfires. In the Our World section, read about the Rotary members helping neighbors there even after suffering their own losses.
Finally, in the “Where are they now?” story, we catch up with a former Rotary Scholar working on the front lines of climate change in the Solomon Islands.
