UNCG announces new indirect cost rates UNCG’s Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) has announced new indirect cost rates. These rates apply to all new grant proposals and are based on UNCG’s new federally-negotiated indirect cost rate agreement. The rate for on-campus research has increased to 47% through June 30, 2027. Starting July 1, 2027, the rate will be 48% until revised. The new agreement also establishes a new rate category, "Other Sponsored Activities," at 30%. The OSA rate can be claimed for projects such as community health programs, artistic performances, conferences, and similar non-research, non-instructional activities. Learn more
- NSF biosketch will no longer include "Synergistic Activities." These will now be submitted as a separate, one-page document for each senior personnel.
- New mentoring requirements, including expanding mentoring plan to include grad students, as well as postdocs. PIs must also certify mentees have an Individual Development Plan (IDP) that is updated annually. Learn more
- New guidance on justifying involvement of foreign organizations in NSF-funded projects.

... the new Chrome River system will change travel reimbursment.
The CAS Office of Research makes dozens of travel awards to faculty each year through our Scholars Travel Fund and International Travel Fund. Our typical process involves receiving the faculty member application, and sending an award letter before the trip occurs. After the trip, the faculty member and department admin prepare a TRV to tally out-of-pocket expenses. Before the TRV goes to Accounts Payable, CAS OOR adds fund info and approval so our fund will be charged for the promised amount. Even though we often email pdfs back and forth, this is essentially a paper-based system.
Chrome River will change much of this process. To receive an award from a CAS OOR travel fund, faculty members will still complete an online application form and receive an award letter from our office before their trip. But once Chrome River goes live on June 3, the paper TRV will be replaced by an online, paperless process. Before a trip, faculty will create a pre-approval in Chrome River. This pre-approval will include info about the planned trip (dates, destination, purpose) as well as an estimated budget (in categories like airfare, hotel, or registration), plus the accounts that will cover these costs. When it's ready, the pre-approval routes through the system for digital sign-off by the traveler's supervisor and budget representatives, and the budgeted amounts will be encumbered in the designated funds. When the traveler returns, the traveler re-opens the pre-approval, enters the actual amounts spent, uploads receipt images, and routes the record again so expenses can be approved and funds can be charged for the reimbursement. Or something like that. Learn more
The key takeaway is that faculty will have more control over and responsibliity for the travel reimbursement process in Chrome River, and the progress of that payment in the system will be much more transparent. As we understand more about the process, we will provide guidance for including OOR travel awards in your Chrome River pre- and post-approvals.
