Looking Back at the First
World Service Conference |
Al‑Anon’s historic first World Service Conference (WSC) was held in April 1961 in New York, New York, USA. In attendance were eight members of the Board of Directors at Al‑Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc., including Cofounders Lois W. and Anne B.; 12 Area Delegates from the United States and Canada; representatives from seven Areas without Delegates; and a number of observers. Bill W., cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous, spoke about the benefits of forming a Conference. The 1961 WSC discussed finances, Conference Approved Literature, and other service‑related topics.

The Forum Needs Your Sharings
about Our Three Legacies! |
Please consider writing about one of the Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, or Twelve Concepts of Service, as your World Service Office receives very few sharings about them. Submissions should range from about 200 to 400 words.
NOTE: Submissions in Spanish or French must be accompanied by an English translation. Submit online, or send your articles to The Forum, 1600 Corporate Landing Parkway, Virginia Beach, VA 23454‑5617, or to wso@al-anon.org.

Adhering to Policies without Policing |
Al‑Anon policies offer consistency when members or groups seek clarification on matters relating to the Al‑Anon fellowship. Learn more about how a policy is adopted or changed.
| Obedience to the Unenforceable |
“The purpose of forming and registering an Al‑Anon group with the World Service Office (WSO) is to gather together for mutual aid and to offer help and hope to anyone affected by the family disease of alcoholism…”
|
Cooperating with Professionals in Your Community |
Al‑Anon cooperates with professionals in healthcare and social services as well as learning institutions, faith‑based groups, public safety agencies, and civic organizations. The World Service Office (WSO) aims to raise awareness of the Al‑Anon program at the national level.
Members play a crucial role in making Al‑Anon and Alateen known to professionals locally through public outreach. By sharing information and promoting goodwill, members enhance the WSO’s cooperation with professionals, aligning our collective efforts to offer help and hope to those affected by alcoholism.

Public Outreach: What’s Hiding
in Your Literature Box? |
When was the last time you looked inside your group’s literature box—under the basket and daily readers? You may be surprised at all the gems just sitting in there: maybe some copies of the Al‑Anon Faces Alcoholism (AFA) public outreach magazine, maybe some other pamphlets perfect for outreach. Consider sharing them with local shelters, community centers, or libraries so that others can have access to these valuable Al‑Anon resources.
