Dear #RPSStrong Family,
Tonight's updates:

| Scholar Athletes – I'm thrilled to share that John Marshall HS Senior Dennis Parker, Jr. is one of 20 finalists for the Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers Scholar Athlete of the Year. Dennis is a two-time Richmond Times-Dispatch All-Metro Player of the Year and has excelled both on the basketball court and in the classroom. Two more outstanding RPS student athletes have been selected to receive the Cheryl L. Oliver and Raymond D. Patterson Memorial Scholarships: Jaineisa Pearson from Thomas Jefferson HS and Cameron Allen from Open HS. The finalists and scholarship recipients will be honored at the Scholar Athlete of the Year banquet and awards ceremony on Monday, June 5. (Photo Credit: Daniel Sangjib Min, RTD)

| New Teacher Bright Spot – Tonight, we're highlighting Earl Layne, exceptional education math teacher at Armstrong HS. “Teaching is a tough profession. But the relationships you forge with your co-teachers and other staff members are invaluable. Furthermore, seeing your students succeed and accomplish what they did not think was possible makes it all worth it.” ~ Earl Layne

- Huge shout-out to the eighth grade team at Franklin MIlitary Academy: Ms. Pascall; Ms. Corey; Ms. Portsmess; our dynamic duo from the humanities team, Ms. White and Ms. Clarke; our great music instructor, Mr. Corey, for being the DJ; and Dr. Smith for showing up and assisting. Because of you, the 8th grade dance was a great success.
- I would be remiss if I did not shout-out the extended day team at Woodville ES! I was thoroughly impressed with the level of preparation, intentionality and engagement that I witnessed from the staff during my visit. Most importantly, seeing the level of excitement and involvement during yesterday's session from the students really made my heart smile! They were also ecstatic to share their experiences from the Saturday Academy. Shout-out to Ashley Allen, Ridgely Carter-Minter, Adele Jackins, Shawn Parris, Tiera Smith, Tamika Burke, Kenya Armstrong and team for a job well done. Teamwork makes the Dreams4RPS work!
- Sending a huge shout-out to Treena Leecost at Henry L. Marsh III Elementary School! Thank you for always being there for me and for all that you’ve done at Marsh!! You are truly an angel and I appreciate you beyond words!! I wish nothing but greatness for you!
- I'd like to give a huge shout-out to our secondary science coach, Lauren Kern! Ms. Kern has been out here working with our science students every day to help get them ready for their SOLs, as well as supporting our teachers during this busy time of year. Not only is she great at reviewing the material with the students, but she also takes the time to build connections with them and boost their confidence. She is an essential part of the RPS team and we are so lucky to have her. Thank you, Lauren!
- I'd like to shout-out the 59 scholars at T.C. Boushall Middle School who read 8 books during March! These scholars earned a free ticket to the Flying Squirrels baseball game last night! I'd like to thank Bailey of the Flying Squirrels for her support with this program. Thanks also to Ms. Harris and Ms. Johnson for being the most patient and generous chaperones that a girl could ask for! Thanks to Ms. K for getting us there quickly and safely! And finally, thanks to my husband and daughter, Michael and Dorothy Haas, for always having my back and being there for me and my scholars! It truly takes a village, and I'm glad that all of you are my village!
- I would like to give a huge shout-out to the 3rd grade team at Miles Jones Elementary School: Lauren Robinson, Tanisha Lee, Jasmine Sheffield, Rosemary Durgan, and Cekina Dilligard. They all stood out in front of the learning cottage, cheering on each 3rd grader and they entered to take their reading SOL. The students felt motivated, encouraged, and ready to take their first SOL test. Way to go team!
- Shout-out to my teacher, Ms. Smith at Southampton ES, who always works hard to teach us and is always patient. We love her and appreciate her. She is so nice and helpful to me and everyone else. I love her and her positive attitude, I wouldn't be who I am today without her.
- I would like to thank my colleagues at Mary Munford Elementary for helping me help one of my students who lives with profound, generalized anxiety. Without the assistance of Liane Bain, Angie Brandt, Kelsey Edelmann, Madeline Grygiel, Kristina McGrail, Caroline Moesta, and Catrina Nappier over the past couple of challenging months for this child, it would not have been possible for this student to make the progress they have made.
- Shout-out to Ms. A. Forrester for her continued advocacy for a better RPS! Hoot Hoot! Shout-out to Mrs. D. Winston, Ms. J. Mayo, Ms. B. Tanner-Martin, and Ms. N. Jackson-Jones of RVA for standing in the gap...Mr. S. Jefferson for his innovative and scholar-centered approaches to his work...Ms. T. Woolridge and Teacher Carreras of RVA! You are a tremendous part of the RVA Parliament and RVA appreciates you both! Shout-out to Mrs. N. Ford of RVA – because of her dedication to the RVA scholars she works with, all of them showed growth on the iReady assessments. Way to go, scholars and Mrs. Ford! Shout-out to Ms. B. Harris, Ms. V. Poveromo, Mr. W. Scott, Mr. R. Robinson, Ms. E. Wait, Ms. K. Jones, and the Teacher Advisory Committee for their willingness to participate, hard work, and dedication!
- Sending a shout-out to our principal, Mrs. Shayla Holeman. You are appreciated for leading Overby-Sheppard with trust, love, passion, and courage. It's a pleasure working alongside you!
- Shout-out to our academic interventionist and EIAs. Your commitment to providing daily math and reading interventions to our scholars has been noticed and appreciated.
- Thank you to Mrs. Wallessa Jones for leading the Swansboro Elemenentary School Concert Choir in their final performance of the year. She is the epitome of class. For 48 years, she has led scholars to great heights. I wish her the best in her next journey of retirement!
