In a joint meeting of the boards of Higher Education and Ministry and Global Ministries held Oct. 8-10 via Zoom, General Secretary Roland Fernandes urged a response “for such a time as this,” citing Esther 4:14. He highlighted progress in five focus areas—education, food security, health, migrant care, and peace and justice—while updating on partner consultations and agency alignment. Read more

The Council of Presidents of the 11 United Methodist-related Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) met online for its fall meeting, Nov. 18, to discuss campus growth initiatives amid growing challenges within the academy; stemming from attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion; and shrinking federal funding for education. Members of the Africa Association of Methodist Institutions of Higher Education (AAMIHE) and Roland Fernandes, general secretary for General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, attend a joint conference with the Africa Association of United Methodist Theological Institutions (AAUMTI) focusing on “Pan-African Collaborative Partnerships for Sustainable Development of Higher Education Institutions.”

More than 80 leaders, educators and students from Methodist-related institutions across Africa met Oct. 13-16 in Johannesburg for a joint conference of two regional associations. The theme, “Pan-African Collaborative Partnerships for Sustainable Development,” emphasized advancing higher education and theological formation across the continent. Read more
