Happy new year to our School of Arts and Humanities family.

The start of our quarter century has underscored the importance of upholding our values: respectfully engaging divergent viewpoints, fostering empathetic communities, strengthening equity and inclusion and pursuing ethical paths forward. Amid devastating environmental crises, shifts in the political landscape and fluctuating economic conditions, we remain resilient.

Students from 2019 PATH Summer Academy

Joint $3M Grant Strengthens Pathway for Transfer Students 

Funding from the Mellon Foundation is expanding the PATH Program, an initiative led by the School of Arts and Humanities and SDCCD that prepares transfer students for careers in the arts and humanities through a social justice lens.

Nancy Guy Named Inaugural Endowed Chair in Taiwan Studies

Professor of Music Nancy Guy is passionate about sharing the ways music shapes culture and society in Taiwan. She has been appointed inaugural holder of the Chiu-Shan and Rufina Chen Chancellor’s Endowed Chair in Taiwan Studies.

Professor of History Frank Biess

Professor of History Frank Biess has been named the newest Rita L. Atkinson Endowed Chair in German Studies.

A historian of Modern Europe with an emphasis on 20th century Germany, Biess is currently investigating the history of Germany's Weimar Republic (1918-1933), the nation's first democratic system, as well as the influence of globalization during this time.

Graduate students in the Department of Theatre and Dance take us behind the scenes into the world of costume design, sharing how research and collaboration combines to bring their creative vision to life on stage.

Holocaust Living History Workshop Series Continues in 2025

Six Holocaust Living History Workshops will be held in 2025 centered on “Violence, Voice and Recognition.” Co-led by the Jewish Studies Program and UC San Diego Library, the series aims to deepen understanding and preserve stories.

Notable Books of 2024 

The University of California recently collected the year’s most critically acclaimed works. Included are Pulitzer Prize-winning “Tripas” by Associate Professor Brandon Som (Literature), “Indian Winter” by Professor Kazim Ali (Literature); and “Freeset” by alumna Sarina Dahlan (Visual Arts).

Sending Love From the Future

Interdisciplinary artwork by Visual Arts MFA students explore family histories and personal stories while conveying hope amid a fast-approaching technological future in a Mandeville Art Gallery exhibit open through Feb. 8.

Memorial Gathering

A memorial for Professor Emeritus Jerome Rothenberg will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31 in the Seuss Room at Geisel Library.

During his nearly 25-year tenure at UC San Diego with dual appointments in the Department of Visual Arts and Department of Literature he helped strengthen the bridge between literary production and criticism, history and studio art.

March 1: Visual Arts Double Feature

Mandeville Art Gallery’s opening celebration for “Border Craft,” a group exhibition addressing geopolitical realities of borderlands, will happen concurrently with Graduate Open Studios featuring works by MFA and Ph.D. students.

Kyoto Prize Laureate William Forsythe

March 13: Kyoto Prize Lecture

Kyoto Prize Laureate William Forsythe—a renowned choreographer who extended ballet to a dynamic contemporary art form—will lead a public lecture with an introduction by Professor Lisa Portes (Theatre and Dance).
