So… we’ve spent the last couple of weeks talking about vineyards and growing things. 🍇 But today, our Bible story takes us somewhere different. We’re going to a church in a city called Philippi, where some people were having a hard time getting along.
Imagine this… You’re sitting in church with people you know. The pastor opens a letter from a man named Paul and starts reading it. At first, everything sounds great! Paul talks about Jesus. He talks about God’s grace. He talks about peace. He talks about being humble and loving others. You’re listening and thinking, This is a really good letter! And then suddenly Paul says…
“Euodia and Syntyche, please agree with each other in the Lord.”😳 Uh-oh.
Everyone in the room knows Euodia and Syntyche. And everyone knows they haven’t been getting along. You can almost imagine them looking down at the floor thinking… “Wait… did Paul really just shout us out in front of EVERYONE?”
We don’t know what they were arguing about. Whatever happened, Paul wanted them to learn something important… Following Jesus changes the way we treat people.
It’s pretty easy to say, “I love Jesus.” It’s easy to sing songs about God. It’s easy to talk about kindness, forgiveness, and grace. But what happens when your friend hurts your feelings? What happens when someone leaves you out? What happens when you and your brother or sister have a disagreement? That’s when our faith becomes real. Because following Jesus isn’t just about what we say on Sunday. It’s about how we live every day.
Paul could have simply said… “Euodia and Syntyche, STOP FIGHTING!” But instead, he teaches them and us, a better way to live. He says… “Rejoice in the Lord always.” Always? Even when you’re mad? Even when someone hurts your feelings? Even when things aren't going the way you want? Yes!
Paul isn’t saying we should pretend that everything is okay when it isn’t. He’s reminding us that even when things are difficult, God is still with us. God hasn’t left us. God still loves us. God’s grace is still holding us. That means a bad day, an argument, or a difficult friendship doesn't get to decide who we are.
Paul also tells them to let their gentleness be seen by others. That means we don’t always have to win. Sometimes we want to prove that we’re right. Sometimes we want the other person to know exactly how wrong they were. Sometimes we want to get even. But Jesus teaches us another way. We can be gentle. We can listen. We can forgive. We can say, “I'm sorry.” We can even say, “I don't agree with you, but I still love you.”
That's not always easy. But that's what it can look like to follow Jesus. Paul tells us… “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer… present your requests to God.” In other words… When you're angry…pray. When you're worried… pray. When you're confused.. pray. When someone hurts your feelings and you don't know what to say… pray. Prayer isn't just about asking God for things. Sometimes prayer is about slowing down and remembering that God is with us. And when we slow down, something amazing can happen. We may start noticing things differently. Instead of thinking only about everything that's wrong with another person, we might begin to see what's good about them.
Paul tells us to think about things that are true, good, beautiful, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worth celebrating. That's a pretty big challenge! Because sometimes our brains do the opposite. Someone says one mean thing to us, and we think about it all day. Pretty soon, we’re keeping a whole list of everything that person has ever done wrong. But Paul says… Train your mind to look for what is good. That doesn't mean pretending that bad things don't happen. It doesn't mean ignoring when someone has hurt us. It means we don't allow anger and bitterness to become the only way we see another person. Every person is someone God loves. Every person is made in God's image. And every person needs grace… including us.
We Need Each Other
This is one reason the church is so important. Church isn't a place where everyone is perfect. It's a place where imperfect people come together to discover how to follow Jesus together. And that's good news! We don't have to figure everything out by ourselves. We have people who can pray with us, encourage us, challenge us, forgive us, and help us become more like Jesus. That's what being part of God's family is all about. Stop here and watch the video that’s included.
