What you need to know about commencement

UTA will celebrate the accomplishments of its newest Maverick alumni with ceremonies Friday, May 10, at Globe Life Field in Arlington. The ceremony time will be approximately two to two and a half hours.

BOGO Renegades tickets

New video board at College Park Center

CPC video board upgrade

College Park Center’s video board upgrade project is complete. With 17,968,896 total pixels inside and outside the arena bowl, this state-of-the-art technology will be a game changer for the fan experience, and it came just in time for the first Dallas Wings game of the season. Learn more about the unveiling of this cutting-edge technology.

MavWire moves to Thursday distribution

May 13 through August 15, MavWire, UTA's internal newsletter to employees, will be distributed weekly on Thursday. To submit an item, email mavwire@exchange.uta.edu. The Office of Marketing, Messaging, and Engagement may send additional MavWires this summer as needed.

Disability Employee Network, UTA Employee Network, UTA belonging and engagement

Disability Employee Network

Attend a meet and greet for the Disability Employee (DE) Network, a UTA employee resource group, on Wednesday, May 8, 12 -1 p.m. in Room 132 of the the Social Work Building. The mission of DE is to promote visibility and build community for people with disabilities and their allies. Food will be provided.

UTA Wellness, Wellness Wednesday, Mental Health First Aid Training for faculty and staff, May 15, Carlisle Suite, University Center, go.uta.edu/wellness

Mental Health First Aid Training for Faculty and Staff

Learn about the emotional dimension of wellness and become a resource to support others with mental health concerns. Complete this free training event on Wednesday, May 15, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. to earn a three-year certification in Mental Health First Aid. The training will be in the Carlisle Suite at the University Center. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Register early to secure your spot.

Singing for seniors

Under the direction of Christopher Curcuruto, director of opera, voice students from the UTA Department of Music and musician Boeun Kim performed an outreach recital last week at the Brookdale Pecan Park senior living community. The students offered a program of art song, melodie, lieder, canciones, sacred, and operatic works.

Opera

UTA Opera recently wrapped its spring production of Jacques Offenbach’s five-act French grand opera, The Tales of Hoffmann. The production was directed by Christopher Curcuruto and music directed and accompanied on piano by Professor Jing Ling-Tam. UTA Opera’s chorus was augmented by members of the University Singers.

UTA men's tennis team

Good job, Mavericks

The UTA men’s tennis team concluded its season with a first-round loss in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament to the University of Oklahoma. The Mavericks finished with a 12-8 overall record after securing their second consecutive Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships.

Office of Undergraduate Research Seeks inSTEM Coach

The UTA Office of Undergraduate Research is hiring a coach for scholars in the inSTEM mentorship program. The inSTEM Coach leads a cohort of 15 to 30 undergraduate STEM students at UTA and works with the National Science and Technology Medals Foundation to develop and deliver holistic support to the scholars in the program. This role is in addition to an employee’s regular work duties, and there is a stipend for this role. The deadline to apply is Monday, May 13. Contact Kayunta Johnson-Winters for more information.

Steam service outage planned 

The Thermal Energy Plant has planned its annual outage of campus steam service for inspection and repair. The outage is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. on Sunday, May 12.  Normal operations should resume by 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 18. During this period, the buildings served by the Thermal Energy Plant will be without hot water and steam (this includes heated water for the swimming pool). Electrical power, air conditioning, chilled water, and domestic cold-water services will still be available. Direct questions to Bobby Kirby at bkirby@uta.edu or 817-272-2564.

Michael Cho, chair of the Bioengineering Department, and bioengineering students

Bioengineer strives to improve diabetes treatment

Michael Cho, chair of the Bioengineering Department, is working on an invention that will allow for better treatment of Type 1 diabetes patients. Dr. Cho’s approach, which he recently patented, will aid doctors in increasing the viability and efficacy of islet cell transplants.
