Alpine
Congratulations to the Team for placing 2nd for Women in State and 8th for Boys. While numbers show success, they do not always capture everything we are. Many athletes grew this season by committing to the team, the sport, and what it can teach. Even more felt their individual responsibility bandwidth grow. You all contributed to the 24/25 BMHS Alpine Team. Be proud of yourselves, learn the valuable lessons, and carry it forward into a new season.
Special items to note: Ruthie Demino won the state GS and her sister, Eden placed third in the GS and second in the SLALOM. Both were named to the Colorado All State SL Team. They were both invited to represent Colorado at the Western High School Championships, along with Thea Armistead (woot woot!) hosted in Grand Targhee, WY from March 12-15.
Additionally, our dear teammate Keena suffered a crash in the state GS and withstood injuries to her knee that required surgery (done this past Friday). She has a long road of recovery and rehabilitation ahead of her. I know how much this team means to Keena, and vice-versa. Let's lift her up and support her during this time of challenge.

Girls Basketball
Another Battle Mountain Girls Basketball season has come to an end, and while the final result wasn't quite what we hoped for, I am so incredibly proud of this Varsity team. As the #40 seed we traveled 9 girls for a playoff game against the #25 seeded Greeley Central Wildcats and gave them an absolute scare, just barely coming up short 37-35 in the final minute. The game was tense throughout, but with the support of our traveling family section, we were able to rally from as many as 10 points down. The heart, effort, and commitment to the team was evident throughout the game from every single player present.
A retired high school coach with 35+ years of experience pulled me to the side afterwards and said this: "No matter what adversity your girls faced, whether it was being down in the game or a call not going their way, they never gave up. The resilience your girls showcased speaks volumes to the type of program you have." I have said it all season, but I will say it again...This team has no quit! High school sports are a great avenue to teach us about the realities of life, so while we pushed to win each game, we can't always be results driven. The struggles and losses, however difficult, taught us to keep our heads up and continue to battle and for that reason I know that each of these players will be truly successful throughout their lives as they will not let one setback stop them.
We accomplished our ultimate goal this season which was to make the playoffs, as one of, if not the smallest 5A school in the entire state. Be proud of that! Now we continue to strive to set the bar higher. I hope everyone that supported this program throughout the season, whether it was at one game or all of them, knows just how appreciative we were! We are not us without you! Go Huskies!

Dance Team
The Battle Mountain Dance Team returned to the competition scene this past January for the first time in nearly a decade. The team brought energy and spirit to the Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball games, making each halftime performance a blast. A season highlight was their electrifying Michael Jackson tribute, a collaboration with the drumline that wowed the crowd at the February pep rally and Boys' Basketball Senior Night. The team also celebrated three dedicated seniors who have been with the team since their freshman year. It was a busy and successful season that concluded with a memorable team banquet to honor all of this years' hard work and achievements.

Nordic
The Nordic State Championships took place in Steamboat last Thursday and Friday, February 27 & 28 under amazing Colorado blue skies. This was the first time in the history of the Colorado High School Ski League that Nordic and Alpine results were NOT combined, giving some of the smaller schools a chance to take home the coveted state championship trophies. Congratulations to Lake County (Leadville) girls and Summit boys for their big wins.
Using combined classic, skate, and (a brand new) relay points, our girls finished 4th and our boys finished 8th overall with some great individual efforts as well.
LEAGUE AWARD The BMHS girls' team won the 3rd place league trophy for the season, proving that their consistency paid off against the super tough Lake County and Summit girls' teams this year.
SHOUTOUTS Shoutouts to sophomore Eliza Pyke for being our top finisher (13th) in Thursday's classic race, along with Kai Skellion (15th) on the boys' side. On Friday's skate race, we had four girls in the top 20: Bella Williams (6th), Eden Demino (7th), Ruthie Demino (12th) and Eliza Pyke (19th). A nod to Carla Hahn as well, who got tripped at the start and actually had to chase down a ski that came off, then got tripped again on one of the big climbs when a girl fell down in front of her. She managed to claw her way back to 21st overall, which shows a lot of grit and character.
Karis Alexander put down two of her top finishes on the season, Lily Linton showed up strong after dealing with a hip injury all season, Reese Davis had a great couple of good races after training all season to get ready to mountain bike race in college, and Sabrina Nabonsal had two strong races in her first year at states, second year (ever) on Nordic skis.
Kai Skellion was our top boy again on Friday, finishing 14th overall in a stacked field and earning all-state honors along the way. The boys' state team was rounded out by the strong work of senior team captain Boden Anderson, Gabe Dozois (another 2nd year ever Nordic skier), sophomore Wyatt Hooker and rookie Tristan Williams.
ALL-STATE TEAMS Based on their total results from the season and the state championships, we had several athletes make the All-State teams this year! The top 8 skiers make the All-State 1st team and the next 8 skiers make the All-State 2nd team.
A huge congrats to the following skiers: Boys: Kai Skellion - All-State 2nd Team (13th overall) Girls: Bella Williams - All-State 1st Team (5th) Ruthie Demino - All-State 2nd Team (12th) Carla Hahn - All-State 2nd Team (14th) Eden Demino - All-State 2nd Team (16th)

Skimeisters
Ruthie Demino took 1st place!. Eden Demino was 2nd. Lily LInton 5th. Kai Skellion first for boys, Gabe Dozois 4th.
All 10 BMHS skimeister athletes qualified for champs, which means they all raced in 2 races of each event (GS, SL, Skate, Classic). That is impressive!

Speech & Debate Finishes the Season
The Battle Mountain Speech and Debate Team wrapped up their regular season at the CHSAA 3A State tournament with an Overall 3rd Place Finish, 2nd Place Overall in Debate Events and 3rd Place Overall in Speech Events. It was an extremely competitive end to the Husky Speechies 24/25 season that saw the team hit several 1st and 2nd place Sweepstakes wins and many, many impressive finishes by individual competitors throughout their extended tournament schedule that begins in October and ends in February. Battle Mountain crowned one State Champion at the tournament, Eva Isaacs, who successfully defended her 23/24 State Championship Title in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Other notable finishes included Gabby Gallegos who took 2nd Place in Informational Speaking and Chase Williams and Silas Heaphy who took 3rd in Duo Interpretation. Mars Arney finished 4th in Program Oral Interpretation, Caidance Henninger took 5th place in Humorous Interpretation and Silas Heaphy, Rocco Romano and Chase Williams dominated the final field of six in Creative Storytelling, finishing 2nd, 4th and 6th, respectively!
But that's not the end of this team's story for the season! The Husky Speech and Debate team qualified 16 competitors from the State Tournament to go on to the National Speech and Debate Association National Qualifying Tournament to be held March 7 & 8 at Colorado Mesa University. To obtain a spot at Nationals, competitors must finish in the 1st Place Spot in their event at the Qualifying Tournament. Congrats to all team members for a great regular season and best of luck to those moving on to the National Qualifying Meet!!

Hockey
The 2024/2025 ice hockey season at Battle Mountain High School showcased the determination and skill of both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams, each making their mark in different ways.
Varsity Season Highlights The Varsity team concluded the season with a commendable 10-8 record. Although they fell short of playoff contention, the season was filled with memorable moments and significant achievements. A standout highlight was the thrilling victory against Durango on February 7th, which not only showcased the team’s potential but also energized the players and fans alike.
Senior Captain Connor Wadey emerged as a key player, with an impressive 23 points throughout the season. He was well-supported by the talented junior line consisting of George Greyson, Assistant Captain Gannon Sharkey, and Nathan Rahe, who collectively contributed to the team's overall scoring efforts.
The leadership of Assistant Captains Ethan Fronteras and Roman Gennett was instrumental this season, as both players demonstrated exceptional skill and commitment, enhancing the team's dynamics in their pursuit of a playoff spot. Additionally, the experience and defensive prowess of seniors Jake Johnson, Asher Silberman, Mason Darnall, and Gus Wenninger provided essential stability to the team, ensuring a solid defensive foundation.
Despite not reaching the playoffs, the Varsity team displayed resilience and teamwork, laying the groundwork for future seasons.
Junior Varsity Success In contrast, the Junior Varsity team had a remarkable season, clinching the title in the CHSAA 4A Mountain Division with an impressive 8-3-1 record. Their success reflects the hard work and dedication of the players and coaching staff, who are excited about the promising future of Huskies Hockey.
The Junior Varsity squad’s performance not only highlights the talent within the program but also serves as a testament to the development of young players, who are poised to contribute to the Varsity team in the upcoming years.
Looking Ahead As the 2024/2025 season comes to a close, the Battle Mountain Huskies Ice Hockey program stands strong, with a mix of experienced players and emerging talent. The foundation laid this season sets the stage for continued growth and success in the future, igniting excitement among players and fans alike for the next season.
