Orange County Board of Commissioners Choose Hamilton, Fowler as Chair, Vice Chair for 2026

The Orange County Board of Commissioners (BOCC) unanimously selected Commissioner Jean Hamilton to serve as chair for 2026 during its Dec. 1 organizational meeting. Hamilton, now in her second term representing District 1, previously served as vice chair and brings extensive experience from her years on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education.

Commissioner Amy Fowler was unanimously elected vice chair. Fowler, an at-large representative, also previously served on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board before joining the BOCC in 2020.

The Orange County Office of Civil Rights & Civic Life is hosting a series of Abolition Day events throughout the week. Join us for opportunities to learn, reflect, and engage with our community.

  • The Fire of Freedom, performed by Mike Wiley, on Friday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. at the Kenan Theatre, 120 Country Club Rd., Chapel Hill.

  • Beyond the Thirteenth Amendment: Reclaiming the Promise of Freedom, a symposium featuring Dr. Martha Jones, Justice Anita Earls, and panels of legal scholars and historians, on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Carrboro Century Center.

  • A Community Screening of “13th” followed by a discussion on Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Rd., Chapel Hill.
