Longwood Reimagined Continues |
The Cascade Garden has made tremendous progress in the last few weeks. The structural steel is complete and glass installation is nearly finished. This 3,800-square-foot jewel box will be the new home to our Roberto Burle Marx-designed garden. Inspired by South America’s rainforests, Burle-Marx (1909-94) designed our original Cascade Garden with verdant vines ascending columns and rock walls, bold foliage, and numerous waterfalls. We will reconstruct the garden, design stone by stone, in this new glass house. To help ensure the plants thrive in their new home, the glass is slightly tinted and has special coatings to reduce light transmission and heat gain since the plants are understory plants, meaning they grow in shady conditions. Inside, the piping for the heating and fogging systems is being installed, which will create an even more tailored and optimal environment for the plants to grow in than the previous glasshouse. About 1,500 new plants for the Cascade Garden arrived onsite this week, including earth-stars (Cryptanthus), other colorful bromeliads, and more. Those plants will join the those we kept from the original garden as we prepare to begin planting (and re-planting) in April 2024.
