Richard Burr Joins Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy as Polis Distinguished Fellow
Richard Burr, a former US Senator from North Carolina, will serve a key role in the newly-launched “Bridging the Divide” initiative at the Sanford School of Public Policy. This program is aimed at fostering dialogue between groups of differing ideological and political views. Burr says understanding the unique and important role that each branch of government serves and the need to protect their structure for future generations is critical to maintaining a strong and stable nation. The first event in the series is scheduled for September 9th and will feature a conversation between Burr and Provost Alec Gallimore.

Congresswoman Foushee Visits Duke Center for Brain and Spine Metastasis
Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (NC-04) visited Duke University to meet with Mary Klotman, MD, executive vice president of health affairs at Duke University and dean of the School of Medicine, to present a copy of the resolution to establish Brain and Spine Metastasis Awareness Month. This resolution calls to increase awareness about treatment, support options, and resources for patients and to invest in research and treatment options. The Duke Center for Brain and Spine Metastasis brings together a multidisciplinary team of experts who seek new answers for patients whose cancer has spread to the brain or spine.

Celebrating Centennial Trailblazer...

Our Duke Centennial Trailblazer this week is Dean Gary Bennett. Bennett is a true Blue Devil, earning a graduate degree in clinical health psychology at Duke on a fellowship from The Duke Endowment and returning in 2009 to serve as an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience. Bennett also taught global health, served in faculty governance and was a vice provost. In 2022, Duke appointed him as dean of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. Bennett's scholarship includes authoring some 200 scientific papers, and his digital health research program has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health with more than $20 million in grant support. He's also pushed for more funding for financial aid, including the Initiative for Students from the Carolinas, which benefits undergraduates from the Carolinas whose family incomes are $150k or less.

Three Trinity Faculty Receive NSF Early Career Award

Three Trinity faculty are among the recipients of the 2024 National Science Foundation (NSF) Early Career Awards. Tony Cheng, assistant professor of sociology; Jean Philippe Gibert, assistant professor of biology; and Masayuki Onishi, assistant professor of biology, are this year’s awardees. Tony Cheng will focus his research on understanding the role played by public agencies and their civil servants in the creation and shaping of inequalities within their communities. Jean Gibert focuses on tiny organisms called protists, and Masayuki Onishi will focus on cellular division. These project-based awards are fully funded by the NSF and consist of five-year research funding for those who have not yet obtained tenure but demonstrate the potential to serve as leaders.
