UNC Health, Duke Health Partner to Build NC’s First Stand-alone Children’s Hospital

Duke Health and UNC Health are partnering to create NC Children’s, North Carolina’s first freestanding children's hospital. The 500-bed facility will include a children’s outpatient care center and a behavioral health center, with plans to be located in the Triangle region. This collaboration, fueled by a $320 million state investment, aims to deliver highly specialized pediatric care and foster groundbreaking research. Set to break ground by 2027, NC Children’s will provide families access to top-tier care without leaving the state, making it a vital resource for children’s health in North Carolina.

Dan Scolnic Shows that the Universe Is Still Full of Surprises

A new study, led by Duke associate professor of physics Dan Scolnic, has confirmed that the Universe is expanding faster than predicted, adding weight to the longstanding "Hubble tension" that challenges current physics models. By refining measurements of the Hubble constant, researchers discovered that the local Universe is expanding faster than previously thought, which conflicts with predictions from the distant Universe. This discrepancy suggests that existing cosmological models may need to be reevaluated, raising the possibility of groundbreaking new discoveries in our understanding of the cosmos.

This research was supported by the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA.

Two Types of Bariatric Surgery Lower Health Care Costs for Patients with Diabetes 

A study from Duke University found that two types of bariatric surgery, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, significantly reduced long-term healthcare costs for patients with type 2 diabetes. Both procedures resulted in similar cost savings, mainly due to a decrease in medication expenses. The study, which analyzed data from 6,690 patients, suggests further research to identify subgroups that may benefit most from each procedure.

This research was supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Trailblazer Deondra Rose

This week's Duke Centennial Trailblazer: Kevin D. Gorter Associate Professor of Public Policy and former Presidential Fellow Deondra Rose. Rose is a national leader in higher education scholarship and democracy. She created Policy Lab, a nonpartisan, service-learning initiative that gives students the opportunity to research actual policy questions and submit useful research to policymakers and other change agents. In addition to her mentorship of students, Rose also served as the former director of Polis: Center for Politics.
