Modeling to Inform Strategies for Disease Eradication: |
The Case of Guinea Worm Disease |
Dr. Smalley presenting her research at the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTMH) conference.
Guinea worm disease (GWD) is a debilitating condition that causes severe pain and disability due to the emergence of worms from painful blisters, often leading to secondary infections. The disease is placing heavy physical and financial burden on impoverished families and communities in Africa. Simulation modeling has played a crucial role in the global effort to eradicate GWD, helping programs like the Chad Guinea Worm Eradication Program understand transmission dynamics and predict the impact of interventions. Over the past year, Dr. Hannah Smalley has presented her research on simulation modeling for GWD eradication at three major conferences, highlighting how modeling informs decision-making by evaluating the impacts of interventions—both established approaches, such as water treatment and dog tethering, and emerging strategies like novel diagnostic tools for dogs.
