Trainees selected for FLARE program
Zer Vue (Antentor Hinton lab), Logan Northcutt (Cancer Biology, Marjan Rafat lab), Darian Thomas (Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, Maureen Gannon lab), Dominique Stephens (Hinton lab), and Jade Stanley (MPB, Danielle Dean lab) have been selected as 2023 participants in the Future Leaders Advancing Research in Endocrinology program. These five trainees make up an astonishing 30 percent of this year's class, which is selected from across the country.

Dominique Stephens, a postdoctoral fellow under the mentorship of Antentor Hinton Jr. (Molecular Physiology and Biophysics) and Steven Damo (Fisk University), was accepted into the 2023 Building Future Faculty Program at NC State University.

Li and Caslin earn travel awards
The Vanderbilt Center for Immunobiology selects a top graduate student and a top postdoctoral fellow each year for the VCI Travel Scholarship to attend the annual meeting of the American Association of Immunologists. The 2023 winners are graduate student Jing Li (Molecular Pathology and Immunology, Jeremy Goettel lab) and postdoc Heather Caslin (Alyssa Hasty lab).

Kit Neikirk (Antentor Hinton Jr. lab) tied for second place in the MAC & EdComm Poster Competition at the recent annual conference of the Americal Society for Cell Biology.

Das, Jennings, and Mehta: inaugural Destination Biochemistry Scholars
Hrishita Das (Bruce Carter lab), Erin Jennings (Kimryn Rathmell lab), and Kavi Mehta (David Cortez lab) are the inaugural recipients of the Destination Biochemistry Postdoctoral Scholar Awards. The awards were introduced last year by the Department of Biochemistry to support two fellows joining the department and one advanced fellow transitioning into an independent researcher role.

Madhvi Venkatesh (Biochemistry) has joined the 2022-2023 National Science Foundation Quantitative Research Methods Scholars cohort. She will help develop a quantitative education research project to advance equity in STEM.

Robinson awarded NIH grant for Faculty ACCESS program
Renã Robinson (Chemistry) received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish the Faculty Accomplished Community that Cultivates Equity and Success in Science program for supporting underrepresented minority faculty members at primarily white institutions to further their success as biomedical scientists and leaders.

Reynolds memorialized
Albert "Al" B. Reynolds, the "father of p120" and professor of cancer biology, unexpectedly passed away on November 3, 2022, at age 66. The Journal of Cell Biology published this memorial in his honor.

Jessica Collins (Biochemistry, Neil Osheroff lab) was featured in a special issue of Chemical Research in Toxicology celebrating women in toxicology and The International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

4th Annual Vanderbilt Alzheimer’s Disease Research Day
The Vanderbilt Memory and Alzheimer's Center will host the 4th Annual Vanderbilt Alzheimer's Disease Research Day on March 24 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. This academic event will showcase research on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias from multiple clinical and basic science departments across campus. Register by 11:59 p.m. on March 1 if you would like to submit an abstract; otherwise, register by March 10.

Open Science Framework workshops
Managing data for complex projects is challenging. Join Jean & Alexander Heard and Science and Engineering librarians Steven J. Baskauf, Josh Borycz, and Alex Carroll as they introduce the Open Science Framework, a free and open web-based platform for managing research data collaboratively based on FAIR principles (the concept that data be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable). Two sessions will be presented, preferentially in person but with Zoom access. Register for one of the two sessions:
- First session: March 24, 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. CDT, Science and Engineering Library Seminar Room (SC 3211).

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute announced an open competition to appoint 25 new investigators who will receive roughly $8 million over a seven-year term, renewable pending favorable scientific review. Apply by March 21.

Donate the ice packs that your biological materials are shipped with and help folks in need. Project C.U.R.E Nashville uses donated ice packs to source medical supplies to developing countries. The Center for Structural Biology Green Team now has ice pack collection bins on the 5th floor of MRBIII, on the 9th floor of Light Hall, and in A2320 MCN.
