SAFETY ZONE

Tree Well Safety

With all the snow from last week, tree wells are still a serious hazard on the mountain

What is a Tree Well?

A tree well is a hollow/unstable area of deep, unconsolidated snow that forms around a tree's base. These wells develop because tree branches prevent snow from packing tightly near the trunk, leaving a hidden void beneath what appears to be solid snow

Why are they so dangerous?

If a skier or snowboarder falls headfirst into a well, the loose snow can collapse around them, making it extremely difficult to escape without help. Falling into a tree well can also result in snow immersion suffocation.

PREVENTION TIPS

  • Always ski in the trees with a partner
  • Give trees extra space
  • Wear a safety whistle if you must ski in trees
  • If you fall into a tree well:
    • Try to stay upright (grab onto tree branches or the trunk to prevent sinking further)
    • Create an air pocket; use slow deliberate movements and call for help
  • If your partner falls into a tree well:
    • Act fast – every second counts; approach from the downhill side
    • Dig from the airway first to help them breathe

EPIC SERVICE AWARD

Congratulations to David Brown and Rebecca Romano for earning the Epic Service Award!

DAVID BROWN

"One of David Brown's adaptive skiers came to the Private Lesson Center this afternoon and asked to speak to a manager. He wanted to let us know about the impact that David has had.

Two years ago after suffering a brain injury, the guest started taking adaptive lessons with David. He wanted to express to us the impact that David has had on his life and subsequently the life of his family. He stated that David has changed his life for the better and in doing so had also changed his entire family's life.

David has made such a positive impact on the guest that he wanted Beaver Creek to know. This is the description of Epic Service and David deserves to be recognized with an Epic Service award."

REBECCA ROMANO

"Rebecca Romano was instrumental in supporting the new HR system roll out at Beaver Creek. As a resort navigator, she guided hiring managers, shared key insights, and tackled challenges with collaborative solutions.

She was a change champion for our hiring managers and members in the resort and sat on many extra meetings, taught her colleagues how to use our new systems, and gather helpful tips and tricks to share with them.

There were many obstacles that surfaced during the roll out, and Rebecca continuously rose above them to find collaborative solutions and help our employees. Her dedication made the transition smoother for employees across the resort. Thank you Rebecca, for your hard work!"
