“The opposite of belonging is fitting in—assessing and acclimating. True belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are; it requires you to be who you are.”

Dear Logan Community,
When I visited Logan and met many of you for the first time a year ago, I found a community where I could belong. Logan’s mission to “cultivate the curiosities of all gifted children” spoke deeply to me. Logan’s Inclusive Community Statement was both aspirational and welcoming. The intentionality and authenticity you shared were real, as was the genuine recognition that we still have work to do.
During my first days on campus, I shared the quote above with the staff and board to ground and guide our work together. I continue to learn and listen. We have work to do together to create a space where ALL gifted children, as well as staff, and families can be our true, authentic selves.
I am thrilled to share that this year’s Auction Mission Moment will raise funds to support our work on Belonging and Financial Aid. Over the last week, we visited all 13 classrooms to listen to students share what belonging means to them; we heard our students say:
|
“Belonging is finding your home.” (Entry primary student)
“You can be you.” (IS student)
“We are working together to create safe spaces.” (AS student)
|
Our students’ words reflect how vital building a sense of belonging is to sustaining The Logan School. In our classrooms, our literature can better reflect authors, illustrators, and characters from diverse backgrounds. Our community could benefit from speakers and professionals to unite us and share new perspectives around giftedness, global issues, and inclusive cultures. By investing in our classrooms, our teachers can participate in professional development to deepen their understanding and learning so we can continue to make Logan a place where we “cultivate curiosities of all gifted children,” together.
Raising money for Belonging and Financial Aid will create more space for empathy, open dialogue, and learning to fully live our values. Together, we can create a school where there is more access and where every student feels valued, respected, and empowered.
With gratitude,
Nicole
