A Disc Golf Legend: Mr. Hines

While at CAC, we love to talk about the students and their accomplishments so much that we sometimes miss what our teachers are doing outside of the classroom. Mr. Hines has made some popular video content that millions of people have seen.

"I’ve had a couple of videos that got some attention in the disc golf world," Mr. Hines said. "My wife recorded one of my hole-in-ones. While the disc was in the air, my then 4 year old said 'Good shot, dad!' before you hear the sound of the chains as it goes in. That one got a bunch of views on Instagram. But my claim to fame is my tutorial on how to throw an overhead shot in disc golf. It ended up getting around a quarter of a million views I think."

Mr. Hines has been playing disc golf since he was in high school when he was super into ultimate frisbee and one of his friends suggested he tried disc golf. He’s been hooked ever since.

"Disc golf combines a lot of things that I enjoy," he said. "There’s the outdoors, the athletic skill, the competition, and there’s just something beautiful about the flight of a well thrown frisbee. When I was in high school I played baseball, and I loved it and felt at peace when I was on the field. But when you graduate, it’s hard to get 17 friends together to go play a game of baseball, so disc golf became my go-to outlet.

He has made about 15 holes-in-one, and his longest drive was about 500 feet. His favorite course to play on is Pleasant View Park in Russellville because that is the course that he first learned how to play disc golf. There is a great lake view and a great design while also just having a lot of nostalgia when he gets to go back and play there.

Ever wanted to try playing disc golf? Talk to Mr. Hines!

Band Takes the Stage!

The CAC bands have been growing and thriving. Today, March 4th, all the bands will be performing for the spring concert. This is the first concert of the concert band season.

Kaida Keaton is a sophomore who joined two years ago during the middle of her 8th grade year. She had played euphonium, a low brass instrument, ever since she joined. This year she has her first ever solo in the song Hymnsong Variants.

“It’s the first two measures of the song," she said. "I think it’s pretty easy considering it’s my first solo. At first there’s two solos, so my section kind of talked it out to see who would get each solo.”

What Kaida enjoys most in band is getting to play and listen to all the music. She’s looking forward to the end of the year concert the most because those are the best concerts for her. She wants people that aren’t in band to know about the strong supportive community that’s in it.

“It doesn’t matter if you start late, you can still catch up, but you have to be willing to put in the effort,” she says to anyone considering joining.

Evan Divino is a senior this year, and he is jazz band president. He plays trombone in concert band and bass in jazz band.

“As Jazz band president of the new Jazz program, my responsibilities aren’t exactly defined. This means that the way that I carry out my influence as president is fully up to my own personal judgement of what a leader should be.”

Evan provides encouragement to all band members, particularly jazz band. He notes the importance of encouraging the jazz band members as most of them are playing less familiar and different instruments than they normally do.

“The reason that I joined the Jazz band was because I wanted to experience more challenging music in order to test my skills as a growing musician.”

He says jazz band has taught him many new things about not only music but also about himself as a growing musician. The band is special to him because it gives him a way to immerse himself in music everyday. He also says that it helps him escape from the world and other worries.

“I get to enjoy a gift that God has given to me and dedicate my performance and abilities to him.”

Make sure to come support all our bands ranging from beginner to high school to jazz band at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. It will be a show you won’t want to miss.

Speak Up! - Noah Minkner

For this year's spring musical, Freaky Friday, senior Noah Minkner is speaking up about how he started acting, some of his favorite moments, and advice for people wanting to start acting. The main reason that Noah started acting was because his friends convinced him to start acting because both of them act and they thought he would enjoy it. For his first show, he did Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief but didn’t end up acting in it — he was the props master. As his advice for people wanting to act he said, “Just do it, even if you think it’s a little weird.” For Noah, the hardest part is singing in front of a big crowd and having to go out in front of people and put yourself out there. “My favorite show has been Clue, we all had a great time and I got to run around the stage like an idiot.” He said he has learned to be more confident in himself because of acting and having to go out and perform in front of a bunch of people. Noah’s favorite moment was in Clue when he had to fake die and his glasses fell off and Nathan Mortan came up and placed them back on his face while he was dead on the floor.
