| IUP Values Me
Student Spotlight: Christina Lyttle
Chrissy is an English education major with a minor in Spanish and will graduate next December. She hopes to become a high school English and/or Spanish teacher. She is the recipient of the 2022 Emerging Leader Award and is a Dean’s List student and Provost Scholar. Chrissy is very active as an IUP Ambassador and was elected as the Student Engagement chair on the executive board. She is slated to become the organization’s president in the coming year and looks forward to continuing efforts to connect members of the IUP community. She shared that she had a goal of becoming an IUP Ambassador due to her many childhood memories involving Breezedale and the IUP Alumni Association. Her mother, the late Mary Jo Lyttle, was director of the alumni office. Chrissy is a Crimson Guide, Welcome Week head leader, past president of the Residence Hall Council, student representative on the Co-op Board of Directors, a Co-op Store brand ambassador, and secretary of the National Council of Teachers of English. She is a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society, United: Young Adult Ministry, and the Andale Spanish Club. Chrissy played a key role in helping her many organizations re-energize following the pandemic by rebuilding a sense of camaraderie among her peers and facilitating the transition back to in-person activities. Chrissy completed the Valladolid, Spain, Study Abroad program last spring and was recently selected to be on Homecoming 2023’s Crimson Court. We thank you, Chrissy!
Staff Spotlight: Erin Conlin
Erin is a faculty member in the Department of History, where she teaches classes on public history as well as 20th-century US history. Her history course provides an opportunity for students to build relationships that will help sustain them during their time at IUP while they also engage in a rigorous analysis of US history that recognizes the nation’s complexities and seeks to understand them. Erin works closely with the Promising Scholars Program, a competitive scholarship program that supports many of our high-achieving students of color. She served as associate director of Academic Advising for the Center for Teaching Excellence and employs many advising best practices in her work with Promising Scholars students, university navigators, and program administrators to help her students succeed and begin their college experience with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive. Erin served on the President’s Commission for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and chaired the committee that developed a DEI syllabus statement and crafted language about how IUP might value faculty and staff DEI work for things like tenure and promotion. She offers courses that are part of IUP’s Pan-African Studies program and currently co-advises the new Black League of Creativity (BLOC) student organization. We thank you, Erin!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we highlight one student and one staff member to “shine a spotlight” on their leadership and involvement in campus programs and their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and/or civil rights awareness. If you have a suggestion for an IUP community member to feature in this section, please email social-equity@iup.edu.
