Gen Z technical skills? Solid. Soft skills? Not so much.
New Gen Z hires lack soft skills aka durable skills, according to managers cited in a January 2024 Harris Poll survey. About 82% of managers said their Gen Z workforce requires more training around interpersonal skills, including speaking to senior leaders and receiving negative feedback. Among Gen Zers, 55% said they are afraid to ask “dumb questions” at work, and 78% said workplace norms can’t be taught, apart from watching their older colleagues in action.
Soft skills can be taught and fostered in a workplace, whether the employees are Gen Z or another generation. UMKC TalentLink's expert facilitator specializes in teaching soft skills to employees at nonprofits and businesses.
