Dear Spartan Community,
It is with a heavy heart and deep gratitude that I share the news of the passing of Lupe Diaz Compean, a beloved SJSU benefactor and champion for our students, who passed away on September 17, 2026, at the age of 99.
Born in Edinburg, Texas, Lupe was the eldest of ten children, learning early on the values of hard work and family devotion. She married Ramiro Compean in 1955, and the couple moved to San José in 1956. Together, through perseverance, determination, and unyielding faith, they built a life and a thriving business, embodying the true spirit of the American Dream.
Since the mid-1990s, Lupe and Ramiro were deeply engaged partners with San José State University. Their visionary philanthropy grew to touch nearly every corner of our campus.
Over the decades, Lupe generously established endowments for student success initiatives; provided life-changing scholarships for emancipated foster youth, California Dream Act students, and high-achieving Spartans; and provided ongoing support for the student union. Today, the vibrant heart of our campus, the Ramiro Compean and Lupe Diaz Compean Student Union, stands as a proud monument to their hard work and commitment to our university.
Lupe lived by a quiet conviction that education opens doors and transforms lives. Though she never sought the spotlight, her enduring legacy lives on in the thousands of students whose lives have been touched by her generosity and in the future generations of Spartans who will continue to achieve their dreams because of her faith in them.
We honor Lupe Diaz Compean with profound appreciation for her extraordinary life, her humble spirit, and her transformative devotion to our campus community.
With gratitude,
